The move was in feeder cattle futures—not live cattle—and the figure is a historical settlement, not a current quote.
What did feeder cattle close at?
Successful Farming reported that August feeder cattle futures settled at $348.80 per cwt on July 14, down $5.55 for the session. The report’s 9:40 a.m. CT update had the contract down $3 at $351.35 per cwt. The loss had therefore widened by the close, although those two figures do not provide a complete account of the session’s price movements. Successful Farming’s July 14 market report contains the figures.
Why did feeder cattle close down more than $5?
The report quoted the Commstock Report, which said futures failed to find support at the prior week’s lows. Its commentary also cited lower cash trade, a wide basis, and weakening boxed-beef values. These are the analyst’s assessments of conditions that day, not a verified breakdown of how much each factor caused the futures decline.
“Today’s trade does some major chart damage as both live and feeder cattle could not find support at last week’s lows, and October live cattle closed below several other meaningful lows,” the Commstock Report said.

The commentary also observed that boxed beef had begun to lose ground, adding that the boxes had not looked strong even when cattle futures were higher. The July report does not establish cash-market settlement data or quantify the contribution of cash trade, basis, boxed beef, or technical trading to the decline.
Did live cattle also fall?
Yes. October live cattle closed down $2.98 at $227.65 per cwt on July 14. October lean hogs moved in the opposite direction, gaining 10 cents to $84.38 per cwt. These are separate contracts and markets; the feeder cattle headline refers only to August feeder cattle futures.

A separate Successful Farming report dated October 6, 2026, said November feeder cattle closed up $8.15 at $338.28 per cwt. Commstock Investments analyst Brian Grete attributed much of that session’s rise to technical factors, including a move above the 100-day moving average and the prior week’s highs, which triggered buy stops. The October 6 report covers a different date and contract month, so its settlement is not a like-for-like comparison with the August contract’s July close or evidence by itself of a market trend.
Both reports are daily contract prices published by Successful Farming, not USDA statistics. They do not establish current feeder cattle prices, exact CME contract specifications, or all the drivers of either session.
