AT&T and T-Mobile’s Feud Continues as the Un-Carrier Fires Back

The AT&T–T-Mobile commercial feud is really a fight over advertising evidence. Here’s what the ads, NAD decisions and NARB review mean for wireless customers.

T-Mobile’s Billy Bob Thornton commercial was a sharp response to AT&T’s “Un-Truths” campaign—but the real dispute is about whether network, pricing, satellite and savings claims can be substantiated. The advertising battle began with competing commercials and expanded into National Advertising Division (NAD) challenges, a National Advertising Review Board (NARB) compliance decision and a referral to government agencies.

For wireless customers, the practical lesson is simple: neither carrier’s commercial proves that its service is universally better or cheaper. Compare the underlying coverage, plan price, taxes, conditions and included benefits instead.

What happened in the AT&T–T-Mobile ad fight?

AT&T launched a campaign featuring Luke Wilson that referred to T-Mobile’s advertising claims as “Un-Truths.” T-Mobile answered with a commercial featuring Billy Bob Thornton, reported on November 17, 2025.

In T-Mobile’s response, a hypothetical critic described its network as having been poor in the past. Thornton’s character argued that conditions change, using outdated phones as a comparison, and concluded that T-Mobile now had “the best network by like, a lot.” The commercial was designed as brand banter, not as a neutral network test.

The exchange was only the visible part of the dispute. Behind the commercials, AT&T had challenged T-Mobile advertising before the NAD. T-Mobile, in turn, objected to AT&T’s use of NAD-related material in its campaign and argued that AT&T had mischaracterized the self-regulatory body’s work.

Available coverage reported that AT&T removed the disputed campaign while indicating that it might continue contesting the matter in court. That report does not establish the final outcome of any related litigation, so it is more accurate to say the campaign was taken down after the dispute escalated—not that AT&T was definitively “forced” to withdraw it.

The later proceedings show why the story is bigger than two celebrity commercials. The central questions became: What exactly is being compared? What evidence supports the claim? And would a reasonable customer understand the same qualification that appears in fine print?

What T-Mobile’s “best network” claim does—and does not—prove

T-Mobile’s commercial claimed that its network had improved substantially and was now the best. That is the company’s advertising position, not an independently established fact in the record described here.

“Best network” is incomplete without a measurement framework. A meaningful comparison would need to identify at least:

  • The metric: speed, coverage, reliability, latency, capacity or a combination.
  • The geography: national results may not reflect a particular home, workplace or travel route.
  • The date: wireless networks change as spectrum, sites and traffic conditions change.
  • The service tier: premium and lower-cost plans can have different priority levels and data terms.
  • The testing method: drive testing, crowdsourced data, internal measurements and independent testing can produce different results.

A customer in a rural area, a crowded stadium or a poorly served building may have a different experience from the national result suggested by a commercial. The ad is therefore best understood as a marketing claim about T-Mobile’s overall position, not a guarantee of service quality at every location.

What NAD found about T-Mobile’s advertising

In a decision dated January 8, 2026, NAD reviewed claims concerning T-Mobile wireless plans and T-Satellite service. The result was mixed: some claims were supported, while others were recommended for discontinuation or modification.

Advertising issue What NAD found Consumer takeaway
One price increase in 10 years NAD found support for T-Mobile’s claim concerning its talk, text and data plans during the relevant period. A supported historical claim does not establish that every current plan is cheaper.
“10 price hikes in two years” by AT&T and Verizon NAD recommended discontinuing the claim. The record did not show that AT&T had instituted 10 increases or that the two companies together had experienced the claimed total in the stated context. A competitor comparison must match the time period, products and calculation used in the advertisement.
T-Satellite coverage NAD recommended changes to language suggesting users would connect whenever they could see the sky or implying universal or effectively unlimited satellite coverage. Satellite connectivity can depend on an unobstructed sky view, supported features and service limitations.
$200 in added value per line NAD found support for certain Experience Beyond claims, but said the advertising did not adequately explain the basis of the claimed value. “Value” may include benefits that are not a discount on the wireless bill.
$600 in value for a family of three NAD found that this claim lacked a reasonable basis. Multiplying a per-line benefit does not automatically substantiate the total family claim.
Families can save 20% T-Mobile said it would permanently discontinue certain claims of this type. The comparison’s result depends on which benefits and plan features are included.

NAD is operated by BBB National Programs and is an advertising-industry self-regulatory body, not a court or government regulator. Its recommendations are important in national advertising, but they are not findings that a company committed a crime or violated the law. Precise descriptions matter: NAD recommended, NAD found, or NAD referred.

See NAD’s January 8, 2026 decision.

Why “save 20%” is more complicated than it sounds

A separate NAD decision dated January 16, 2025 examined T-Mobile’s claim that customers could “save on every plan vs. the other big guys.” T-Mobile’s comparison added the value of bundled third-party streaming services to competing plan prices.

  • BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.

That creates two different possible meanings:

  1. Wireless-plan price: the amount charged for cellular service itself.
  2. Total perceived bundle value: the wireless price after assigning a dollar value to included streaming or other benefits.

A plan can be cheaper under the second calculation while costing more as a standalone cellular plan. NAD found that consumers could interpret the advertisement as saying T-Mobile’s wireless plan price itself was lower. In some comparisons, the T-Mobile plan was more expensive than a comparable AT&T or Verizon plan when streaming benefits were excluded.

NAD did not prohibit every comparison involving included services. It found that T-Mobile could make truthful claims about the value of those benefits, but the basis of the comparison needed to be clear rather than buried or implied.

This distinction matters for household budgets. A streaming subscription has value only if the customer wants the service and would otherwise pay for it. A benefit that is valuable to one family may be irrelevant to another. Consumers should not treat the provider’s assigned value as cash savings unless they would actually purchase the included service separately.

NARB said the revised savings disclaimer was still inadequate

  • Stylish yet durable design. Enjoy the premium look and feel of vegan leather with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and underwater protection.

T-Mobile had revised its disclosure to say, “By getting built-in benefits they leave out.” NARB concluded that this wording did not clearly tell reasonable consumers that the comparison included ancillary services beyond basic cellular service.

The decision illustrates an important advertising principle: adding a disclaimer is not always enough. The disclosure must change the overall takeaway when the headline claim could otherwise lead customers to believe that the base wireless plan is cheaper.

NARB concluded that T-Mobile had not adequately complied with the recommendations. T-Mobile disputed that conclusion and indicated that it planned to seek further review, according to the published release.

What the NAD referral means

On December 10, 2025, NAD said it would refer T-Mobile to the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general after T-Mobile declined to participate in an inquiry concerning claims about superior 5G network capacity.

The claims appeared in places including T-Mobile’s website, YouTube, Facebook, press materials and promotional events. T-Mobile said it declined to participate because AT&T had a pending federal lawsuit against BBB National Programs.

A referral is not the same as an FTC investigation, enforcement action or finding of legal liability. It means the self-regulatory body sent the matter to government authorities after the advertiser did not participate in the NAD process. The available record does not establish that the FTC or a state attorney general later found T-Mobile liable.

How customers should compare AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

The commercials may be entertaining, but a switching decision should use the customer’s own circumstances.

  1. Check actual locations. Compare service at home, work, school and on regular travel routes. National maps do not guarantee indoor reliability.
  2. Consider congestion. Ask how the plan is prioritized and whether data may be slowed during busy periods.
  3. Calculate the base price separately. Include the number of lines, autopay requirements, taxes, fees and any required plan tier.
  4. Value benefits realistically. List streaming, cloud, hotspot, roaming and satellite features separately. Assign value only to benefits the household will use.
  5. Read promotion conditions. A “free” phone commonly depends on an eligible trade-in, plan, bill credits and keeping the line active for a specified period.
  6. Check satellite limitations. Satellite service may require a clear view of the sky and may support only selected messaging, emergency or location features.
  7. Look beyond the introductory period. Record the price after promotional credits expire and identify what happens if a customer upgrades, cancels or changes plans.
  8. Compare the same configuration. Use the same number of lines, device assumptions, hotspot allowance, benefits and service level for each carrier.

Readers who want a third option can also compare an MVNO such as US Mobile, while remembering that priority data, roaming, device promotions and customer support may differ from those offered directly by a national carrier.

What remains unresolved

The available decisions establish an ongoing advertising dispute, but they do not answer every current question. The final status of litigation involving AT&T and BBB National Programs should be checked against court records rather than inferred from commercial coverage. The available material also does not establish whether every challenged commercial remained in active use at the time of publication or whether later government action followed the referral.

Nor does a decision about one claim automatically invalidate every related advertisement. Each claim depends on its wording, evidence, audience, time period and presentation.

For customers, the safest conclusion is not that one carrier always wins. It is that broad claims such as “best network,” “save 20%” and “connected whenever you can see the sky” require context. The relevant question is what the claim measures, what it includes and whether it matches the service the customer would actually buy.
