The available dated accounts show EVO’s plans changing: ATR described a target of around 2030 or later in 2024, while Flight International reported a revised target of around 2035 in March 2025. That is the latest reported target covered here, not a confirmed current commitment.
ATR’s model family: the ATR 42 and ATR 72
ATR’s commercial aircraft family includes the ATR 42 and ATR 72. They are the family’s established names in the sources covered here; those sources do not provide a complete, dated chronology of every variant, launch, first flight, certification or entry into service. A year-by-year model timeline would therefore go beyond what is established.
The available material also does not give balanced figures for seating capacity, range, fuel consumption or route economics across the models. It supports identifying the family and tracing the proposed EVO direction, but not a reliable technical comparison between individual ATR 42 and ATR 72 variants.
What ATR said EVO might become in 2024
In a 2024 interview, ATR chief executive Nathalie Tarnaud Laude said the company was in EVO’s pre-feasibility phase. The concept under consideration combined several changes:

- New propellers, alongside improvements to the cabin and aircraft systems.
- Eco-design and compatibility with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
ATR’s stated ambitions included higher performance and a double-digit reduction in operating costs. These were development aims, not demonstrated or certified EVO specifications. At that point, Laude said the company was targeting entry into service around 2030 or later. Read the 2024 SP’s Airbuz interview with Laude.
Why the reported EVO schedule moved to around 2035
In March 2025, Flight International reported that ATR had pushed EVO’s target entry into service to around 2035 after a 2024 review of technology maturity with engine manufacturers and partners. ATR senior vice-president of engineering Daniel Cuchet said a new, clean-sheet engine was probably unrealistic within the desired timeframes or performance targets. The report described the revised direction as a major evolution of the engine paired with a parallel-hybrid system.

That report attributed a 20% fuel-burn saving target to the hybrid approach. It is a program target, not a certified result or a measured in-service outcome. ATR senior vice-president commercial Alexis Vidal also said the technology was not mature enough for the company to commit to an imminent launch decision. | Planning point | What was reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 concept and schedule | Hybrid-electric capability and other updates under study; entry into service around 2030 or later. | ATR’s earlier planning position during pre-feasibility. |
| March 2025 technology direction | Major engine evolution plus a parallel-hybrid contribution, rather than a clean-sheet engine. | A reported change in approach following a technology-maturity review. |
| March 2025 schedule and performance aim | Entry into service around 2035 and a 20% fuel-burn saving target. | Reported program targets, not confirmed specifications or results. |
How to interpret ATR’s fuel and emissions claims
In the 2024 interview, Laude said ATR aircraft used 45% less fuel and produced 45% less CO₂ than comparable regional jets. The comparison is ATR’s company claim; it should not be read as an independently established figure for every aircraft, route or operating condition.

Laude also cited an ATR flight in 2022 using 100% SAF in both engines, which she said achieved up to 80% lower CO₂ emissions. That figure describes the company’s claim about that flight, not an EVO result or a general guarantee for every SAF-powered flight. The interview said ATR was awaiting ASTM certification before offering full 100% SAF capability to customers.

The dated accounts document an evolving proposal, not a finalized aircraft specification or firm delivery timetable. The latest target covered here is Flight International’s March 2025 report of around 2035; these sources do not establish EVO’s status after that report. ATR’s 2024 interview separately reported 36 aircraft delivered in 2023, 44% more than in 2022, and an ambition to produce 80 aircraft per year by the end of the decade. Those figures describe deliveries and a production target, respectively, rather than the development or production status of EVO.

A complete history of the ATR family would require dated records for each variant’s launch, first flight, certification and entry into service. The sources cited here do not establish that chronology, so the defensible account is narrower: ATR’s named family includes the 42 and 72, while EVO remains a proposed next-generation direction whose technology and schedule were still under discussion in the latest dated report.
