Atlassian announced the deal on September 4, 2025; it closed on October 20, 2025. The announcement put the transaction at about $610 million, while Atlassian later reported a $488.3 million accounting purchase price. Dia is the company’s stated focus and continued receiving updates after the acquisition. Arc’s future is less settled: the company said Arc and Arc Search would continue to exist, but that did not promise a particular long-term roadmap.
What happened, and when?
This was an acquisition of the company, not just a partnership or investment. Atlassian acquired 100% of The Browser Company’s outstanding equity, taking ownership of the business behind Dia, Arc and Arc Search.

How much did Atlassian pay?
The two reported numbers describe different calculations, so they should not be treated as competing claims about one exact payment. Atlassian’s September 2025 announcement described an approximately $610 million all-cash transaction value inclusive of The Browser Company’s cash balance. In a later filing, Atlassian reported a $488.3 million final accounting purchase price: $481.5 million in cash and $6.8 million from the non-cash settlement of existing shares it already held as a strategic investment. The announcement value; the accounting disclosure.
The filing’s preliminary purchase-price allocation included $22.16 million in acquired cash and cash equivalents, $91 million in intangible assets, and $376.885 million in goodwill. These accounting allocations help explain the transaction’s reported value; they do not disclose how much any particular shareholder or employee received.

Why did Atlassian buy a browser company?
Atlassian’s stated thesis is that knowledge work happens across browser tabs and SaaS applications, while conventional browsers are designed for general browsing rather than work. It sees Dia as a browser for knowledge workers in the AI era: a place where AI could use context from a person’s work and help move tasks across applications. Atlassian’s explanation.
The broader strategic implication is that Atlassian may want to extend beyond the Jira and Confluence destinations where users complete specific tasks, and into the browser layer they use throughout the workday. That is an interpretation of its rationale, not a confirmed roadmap for particular integrations or features.

What changed for Dia users?
Dia remained under active development
The Browser Company said Dia would be its main focus and that Atlassian’s resources could help bring it to more platforms faster. Subsequent product activity supports the conclusion that development continued: Dia shipped Sync in April 2026 and published regular updates through July. Those releases included tab management, meeting-related tab groups, performance work and GitHub workflows. The company’s acquisition announcement; Dia’s release archive.
Sync and imports can help with migration, but do not guarantee feature parity
Dia’s Sync feature lets users move browser data such as profiles and bookmarks between devices. Its download page also says users can import bookmarks, extensions, passwords and history from Chrome, Safari, Edge and Arc. Importing those items is not the same as reproducing Arc’s Spaces, pinned tabs, shortcuts or other workflows exactly. Test the import before relying on it for a work setup. What happens to Arc and Arc Search?
At the time of the deal announcement, The Browser Company said Arc and Arc Search would continue to exist, while identifying Dia as its main focus and promising to share a longer-term plan later. That statement is not a guarantee that Arc will receive major new features indefinitely, nor does the acquisition itself establish a shutdown date or a required migration. The prudent distinction is that Dia has visible post-acquisition development, while Arc’s long-term product direction is not established by the cited announcements. Atlassian’s ownership alone does not prove that it can automatically read each Dia user’s browsing history, passwords, open tabs or AI chats. The acquisition announcement also does not provide a technical privacy audit. Before placing sensitive work data in a browser with AI features, review Dia’s current privacy information, terms and account settings, and understand what processing is involved in the features you choose to use. Likewise, positioning Dia for knowledge workers is not proof that it already offers every control an organization may require. The acquisition announcement does not establish specific SSO, SCIM, mobile-device management, audit-log, data-retention, compliance-certification or data-residency capabilities. Enterprise buyers should require current product documentation for their requirements rather than infer those controls from Atlassian’s ownership.

Practical decision points
- Arc loyalist: There is no acquisition-based need to migrate immediately. Test Dia’s import and compare the workflows you depend on before switching.
- AI-browser explorer: Dia is the product receiving visible investment. Review account and AI settings before using it with sensitive material.
- Enterprise buyer: Ask for written, current documentation on administration, security, privacy and compliance before deploying it for company data.
- Privacy-sensitive user: Do not assume that corporate ownership answers how data is processed; assess the product’s policies and the specific features you intend to use.
