The “breakout” in the February 2018 headline referred to Atari SA shares—not a cryptocurrency price. HotHardware reported that the shares had surged more than 60% after news of a proposed Atari-branded token platform. That was a dated stock-market report, not evidence of a token rally or current market momentum. The 2018 proposal, Atari Token (ATRI), and a later replacement-token plan were separate developments.
What the 2018 headline actually described
HotHardware’s February 16, 2018 article said Atari had entered a long-term brand-licensing arrangement with Infinity Networks. The article described Infinity Networks as the company that would create a blockchain platform and proposed token for purchasing digital content, including games, music, and movies. It also reported that Atari took a minority share in Infinity Networks and expected royalties and future earnings. These are claims made in that 2018 article, not confirmation that the proposed platform or token launched.
The reported surge of more than 60% was in Atari SA shares. It was not a reported gain in the price of an Atari cryptocurrency. The figure belongs to HotHardware’s account of the share reaction in February 2018; it says nothing about Atari’s share price now. HotHardware’s 2018 article
How the 2018 proposal differs from Atari Token (ATRI)
ATRI was a later project. Atari’s 2022 Euronext information document described Atari Chain Ltd, a Gibraltar company formed as a 50/50 joint venture between Atari SA and ICICB Limited, as the entity created to issue Atari Tokens. The filing said 7,771,000,000 tokens were created in April 2020. That is a historical company-reported creation count, not a circulating-supply figure.

The same filing described Atari Token as an Ethereum cryptocurrency using the ERC-20 standard, in free circulation since November 2020. Atari’s November 2, 2020 announcement said a public offer priced at $0.25 per token had closed early, with 4 million tokens offered, and that trading was beginning on Bitcoin.com Exchange. Those are launch-era details: the offer price is not a current quote, and the number offered is not current supply.
Atari’s documents outlined intended uses for ATRI in games and digital assets. They establish the token’s historical design and launch, not its current price, liquidity, or exchange availability. Atari’s 2022 Euronext information document · Atari’s November 2020 sale and trading announcement

Atari X’s proposed replacement token was later discontinued
On May 24, 2022, Atari announced Atari X as a consolidation of its blockchain interests under Atari’s control. The company said it was defining a new token’s utility, governance, and tokenomics, and named NiftyLabs as the project’s primary developer. The announcement described a token in development; it did not say the replacement token had launched. Atari’s Atari X announcement
Atari subsequently changed course. Its FAQ said it adjusted the proprietary utility-token plan in response to changes in the cryptocurrency regulatory and legal landscape, proposing instead a fixed SAND distribution for eligible ATRI holders based on an April 18, 2022 snapshot. Atari’s half-year 2023/24 results later reported that the replacement-token project had been terminated and that the SAND claim ended on September 22, 2023. The results described Atari X as pivoting toward community management and cross-collaboration.

What the headline does not tell you about crypto today
The old headline cannot establish a current ATRI price, trading volume, or exchange listing. It also should not be read as saying Atari currently issues a new cryptocurrency: the 2018 proposal was associated with Infinity Networks, ATRI was a distinct 2020 project, and the replacement-token plan announced under Atari X was later terminated. For a personal-finance decision, treat the headline as historical context, not a current market signal.
