At Warren Buffett’s Final Annual Meeting as CEO, He Remained Bullish on America

At his final Berkshire meeting as CEO, Warren Buffett paired confidence in America’s future with an argument for trade and shared prosperity.

At Berkshire Hathaway’s May 3, 2025 annual meeting, Warren Buffett expressed confidence in America’s long-term prospects while acknowledging that the country has changed and still faces problems. His optimism was not an endorsement of every policy: he also argued for trade and said prosperity abroad could benefit Americans. This was Buffett’s final meeting as Berkshire CEO, not his final appearance at an annual meeting.

What Buffett said about American exceptionalism

A question at the meeting asked whether investors were too pessimistic about American exceptionalism—the developmental tailwind and resilience the United States had shown in the past. Brown Advisory’s August 14, 2025 account summarizes Buffett’s answer: he recognized how radically the country had changed and that it still had problems, but said he would choose to be born in the United States again. That is a secondary-source paraphrase, not a verified verbatim quotation; no official transcript is cited here. Brown Advisory’s account

The point was confidence over a long view, not a claim that America is without shortcomings. Buffett’s answer treated the country’s capacity to keep changing as part of the case for its future.

Why his trade remarks matter to that optimism

Buffett’s confidence did not mean support for economic isolation or a winner-takes-all view of prosperity. At the same meeting, he criticized trade barriers and argued that countries should trade with the rest of the world and specialize in what they do best. Axios quoted him saying, “There’s no question that trade, trade can be an act of war. I think it’s led to bad things,” before making the case for trade and specialization. Axios’s May 3, 2025 report

He also argued that other countries becoming more prosperous would not have to come at America’s expense, and could make Americans more prosperous and safer. The connection is straightforward: his optimism about the United States was compatible with seeing international economic gains as mutually beneficial, rather than as a fixed amount one country must lose for another to gain.

Why this was Buffett’s final meeting as CEO—not his final meeting appearance

Buffett’s last Berkshire annual meeting as CEO took place on May 3, 2025. At that meeting, he said he would recommend Greg Abel as his successor. Berkshire’s board later appointed Abel President and CEO effective January 1, 2026, while Buffett remained chairman. Berkshire Hathaway’s May 5, 2025 release filed with the SEC

The distinction matters: “final” describes Buffett’s tenure as CEO at the 2025 meeting, not the end of his attendance. CNBC’s archive lists video of the 2026 annual meeting, at which Buffett appeared as chairman. CNBC’s Berkshire Hathaway annual-meeting archive

What Buffett said would change after the leadership handoff

In a November 10, 2025 shareholder message, Buffett said he would stop writing Berkshire’s annual report and speaking at length at the annual meeting. He described himself as going quiet—then qualified that with “Sort of.” He said he would continue communicating through an annual Thanksgiving message. The transition therefore changed Buffett’s executive role and his regular public-facing contributions; it did not make him disappear from Berkshire or erase the distinction between his final meeting as CEO and later meeting appearances.
