It was No. 2 on the year-to-date chart through March, behind Monster Hunter Wilds. The monthly result covers a partial month: Shadows launched on March 20.
What was the best-selling game in March 2025?
In GamesBeat’s report of Circana’s U.S. chart, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows placed first by dollar sales for March 2025. MLB: The Show 25 ranked second and Monster Hunter Wilds third. The year-to-date chart through March reversed the top two: Monster Hunter Wilds was first and Shadows second. GamesBeat’s Circana-attributed chart coverage was published April 24, 2025, and updated June 18, 2025.
“Best-selling” here means the most dollar sales recorded for the period, not the most copies sold. The report does not state how many units Shadows sold or its individual dollar-sales total.
Why the monthly result covers a short sales window
Ubisoft lists March 20, 2025, as the game’s release date. That leaves only the final 12 calendar days of March after launch, so the No. 1 position is a monthly ranking for a partial month on sale—not a full-month comparison of every game’s availability. Ubisoft describes it as an action-adventure, open-world game set in feudal Japan, featuring playable protagonists Naoe and Yasuke. Ubisoft’s store listing also lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Steam among platform entries.

Mobile spending in the content total was provided by Sensor Tower, rather than Circana.

Mat Piscatella, identified by GamesBeat as Circana’s executive producer for games reports, said March hardware spending was the lowest for that month since 2019, when it was $279 million. He also said the only segments showing year-over-year growth were non-mobile subscriptions, up 11%, and digital premium downloads on console, up 12%; mobile content spending was down 6%, with Sensor Tower as the mobile data source. Those market trends provide context, but they do not explain the individual game’s ranking.
How to interpret the ranking and its limits
- It is a U.S. ranking. It should not be read as a global sales result.
- It ranks dollars, not units. Circana’s chart does not establish the number of copies sold, the game’s own revenue, or profitability.
- Digital-sales coverage varies. GamesBeat notes that entries with missing digital sales are marked and that Nintendo does not report its digital sales to Circana. Comparisons across platforms should account for those chart footnotes.
- The result does not establish lifetime success or expectations. A monthly chart position alone does not show whether the game was profitable, met Ubisoft’s internal targets, or will remain successful over time.
GamesBeat reported that seven new games entered the March top 20, the most in 2025 to that point, with Shadows among them. That is a chart observation, not evidence of the game’s longer-term sales trajectory.

Ubisoft’s day-one statement is a separate measure
In its fiscal 2024–25 results, Ubisoft said Shadows had the second-highest day-one sales revenue in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, behind Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and set a new Ubisoft record for day-one performance on the PlayStation digital store. Ubisoft’s investor information is the source for that company statement. It is not the basis for Circana’s March U.S. chart position, and it should not be treated as an independently reported unit count.
