The headline’s “mixed” description reflects the different directions among markets, but AP’s later October 7 account characterized the region’s trading as mostly lower.
Wall Street’s record-setting session
On Tuesday, October 6, U.S. stocks advanced. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at records, while the Dow also gained.

The Associated Press attributed support for the rally to optimism about corporate earnings, especially in technology and AI-related sectors. The S&P 500 had risen 23% from its late-March 2026 trough through the October 6 close; that historical gain does not establish what markets will do next.
Oil prices early Wednesday
Early on October 7, Brent crude, the international benchmark, was up 0.9% at $101.49 a barrel. U.S. benchmark crude was also up 0.9%, at $90.21 a barrel, according to AP. These are point-in-time observations, not prices guaranteed to persist through the day.

For context, AP reported that Brent settled at $100.58 on Tuesday, October 6, up 0.3% from Monday, after dipping to roughly $97 intraday. The same October 6 report put the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield at 5.28%, down from 5.31% late Monday. Oil prices and bond yields can move quickly, and the Wednesday and Tuesday figures refer to different observation times.
Why record U.S. stocks did not mean Asian shares rose
Earnings hopes supported U.S. stocks
FactSet analysts expected nearly 30% year-over-year growth in S&P 500 earnings per share for the July–September 2026 quarter, as reported by AP. It was an expectation, not a reported result. If realized, it would mark a third consecutive quarter of growth above 25%, according to the report. Investors were betting that strong profits—particularly among technology and AI-related companies—could justify higher share prices.

Costs and rates remained risks
Elevated energy costs and restrictive interest rates complicated that outlook. Higher oil prices can add to cost pressures, while high borrowing costs can weigh on businesses and consumers. AP also reported concern among critics that some AI-related stocks may be in a bubble; that is an attributed concern, not an established finding.
Ng Jing Wen of Mizuho Bank, quoted by AP, said the rally reflected confidence that corporate earnings could withstand elevated energy costs and restrictive interest rates, and that investors appeared to prioritize earnings momentum over near-term inflation risks. The earnings forecast and those market judgments may change as companies report results and conditions evolve.
