Asian Shares Choppy as Earnings Loom and Oil Slips

Asian markets sent mixed signals on Monday, October 12, 2026: South Korean shares fell, while a broad Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan was little changed. Oil futures also eased after opening higher. Investors were weighing Gulf supply risks against uncertain energy announcements, while looking ahead to U.S. bank earnings and inflation and retail-sales data. These are Reuters’ snapshots and expectations from the Asian morning session, not live prices or confirmed data releases.

Why were Asian shares choppy?

Regional equities did not move together. Reuters reported that South Korean stocks fell 1.1%, while MSCI’s broadest Asia-Pacific shares index excluding Japan was little changed. Japan’s market was closed for a holiday, so it was not part of that day’s trading comparison.

The report framed the cautious tone around a test of elevated technology valuations: investors were waiting to see whether company results would support expectations for strong earnings growth. My Bui, an economist at AMP, said all S&P 500 gains since mid-September had been in technology, according to Reuters. That observation describes the reported period; it does not establish how markets would perform next.

Why did oil slip, and what could change the picture?

In Reuters’ October 12 session snapshot, Brent crude futures fell 1.1% to $103.50 per barrel after starting higher; the report said Brent’s recent top was $109.97. U.S. crude futures lost 1.2% to $90.73 per barrel. These are time-specific futures quotes, not current prices.

Conflicting supply signals helped shape the move. Reuters cited strikes on shipping and airports in the Gulf as a source of concern, alongside confusion following President Donald Trump’s announcement of an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia that neither side had confirmed. The report also described a proposal for Russia to increase diesel exports. Senators from both parties objected, arguing the proposal could be illegal; Reuters did not establish that the proposal had been implemented or that its legality had been settled.

The session’s decline therefore did not show that energy-supply risks had passed. Disruption risks and the possibility of additional Russian diesel supply pointed in different directions, while the status and effects of the reported announcements remained uncertain.

What did the earnings outlook imply?

LSEG IBES expected S&P 500 third-quarter earnings to rise by more than 30%, according to Reuters’ October 12 report. The report said most of the expected increase was concentrated in technology. That makes the headline growth figure a test of both results and their breadth: strong aggregate earnings would not necessarily mean gains were evenly distributed across sectors.

Major U.S. banks were expected to begin reporting quarterly earnings on Tuesday, October 13. Their reports were among the first near-term checks investors could assess as the earnings season began.

Why AI financing was also in focus

Investors were considering whether technology companies’ expected AI-related revenues could justify the cost of financing investment. Bui said: “Overall, wider spreads suggest investors are questioning whether AI revenues can keep pace with rising borrowing costs.” She also said corporate borrowing to fund AI spending, alongside wider high-yield spreads, could raise refinancing costs as debt matures. These are her interpretations of market conditions, not a measured conclusion about every investor or company.

Reuters reported that the U.S. investment-grade credit-default-swap index had risen to its highest level since the Iran war began, but gave no numerical level. The report also said Treasury yields reached 24-year highs in the prior week without providing a specific yield. Neither figure should be inferred from those descriptions.

What inflation and spending signals were investors watching?

Reuters reported market expectations—not released results—for U.S. consumer inflation. Headline CPI was expected to rise 0.6% month over month, putting the annual rate at 3.7%; core CPI was expected to rise 0.2% month over month, putting the annual rate at 2.5%. Those forecasts were part of the week’s focus alongside producer-price and retail-sales data.

The distinction between headline and core mattered to the market discussion: the former includes food and energy, while the latter excludes them. Bruce Kasman, JPMorgan’s head of global economics, said: “The signals on inflation point to a sharp rebound in headline inflation that will squeeze purchasing power and a firming in core inflation that will keep central banks focused on near-term hikes.” This was his assessment, not a report of CPI outcomes.

What were the rate expectations—and what did they mean?

Reuters said market pricing implied an 18% chance of a Federal Reserve rate increase that month and an 85% chance in December. These were market-implied probabilities at the time of the report, not a Fed commitment or a guarantee that rates would change. The story also noted bets on rate increases in the European Union, Japan, and the United Kingdom before year-end, without giving exact probabilities for those markets.

For household finances, higher rates can affect borrowing costs and the returns available on savings, but this market snapshot does not establish what any central bank would decide or how a particular person’s rates would change. The relevant near-term evidence in the report was still to come: earnings, inflation, producer prices, and retail sales.
