Ashok Leyland showcased six defence products and technology solutions at DefExpo India 2018, spanning tactical and logistics vehicles, protected mobility, artillery power systems and tracked-vehicle upgrades. The event report was published on April 12, 2018; its descriptions and claims reflect the company’s statements at that time, not a current assessment of performance or fleet status.
What Ashok Leyland exhibited
The six entries were not six competing vehicle models. Three were named vehicle platforms, while the other entries covered an artillery power pack and mobility solutions for tracked vehicles.
| Exhibit | Role described in the 2018 report | Details reported |
|---|---|---|
| LSV 4×4 — Light Specialist Vehicle | Specialist tactical mobility | Ashok Leyland described it as a platform for reconnaissance, quick response and patrol, and counter-insurgency operations. The company said it was designed for all-terrain mobility, armour protection and independent battlefield operation, and called it the only vehicle bullet-protected on all four sides. These are company descriptions, not independently reported test findings. |
| Guru 715 | General-service logistics | The report associated it with paramilitary forces and international markets, and listed troop and load carrying, medical ambulance use and ultra-light recovery among its possible applications. |
| MBPV — Medium Bullet Proof Vehicle 4×4 | Protected mobility | The report said it was developed for India’s Ministry of Home Affairs for counter-insurgency operations and was then in operation with police forces in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. That is a historical 2018 statement, not a current fleet-status update. |
| Super Stallion 8×8 | High-mobility and combat-support logistics | The report said the Indian Army had inducted it, described it as a platform for special-service and combat-support logistics, and said it had replaced vehicles previously imported by the Army. |
| Power pack for artillery guns | Last-mile mobility for self-propelled guns | The report described a system for moving and positioning a self-propelled gun before firing. It said the power pack used an Ashok Leyland H Series engine and associated intake, exhaust, cooling, fuel and driver-control subsystems, customized for different Army gun types. |
| Tracked-vehicle repower, upgrade and FICV mobility solutions | Mobility and engine upgrades | The named platforms were BMP, T-72 and T-90 tanks. The report said the engines were indigenously designed, developed and manufactured. |
What the showcase says about the company’s defence work
The exhibits ranged from complete vehicles to components and upgrades. In broad terms, Ashok Leyland presented specialist tactical mobility, logistics, protected mobility and high-mobility support vehicles alongside solutions intended to power artillery systems and improve tracked platforms. The report does not provide like-for-like performance measurements, so it cannot establish which exhibit was more capable or how they compared with alternatives.
The company also described its defence work in terms of tenders and future business. Managing Director Vinod K. Dasari said Ashok Leyland could bid for 20–25 per cent of Indian Army tenders, compared with less than one per cent earlier. That was his attributed statement in 2018, not independently verified tender data.

The event report reproduces company descriptions and executive remarks. It does not include independent test results, comparative performance data, contract documents or an update on the products’ present-day status.
