Arm vs. x86 Processors: Architecture, Compatibility, and Performance

Arm and x86 describe different processor architectures, but neither guarantees better speed or battery life. For Windows buyers, check native apps, emulation, drivers, games, and tests of the specific computers you are considering.

Arm and x86 are processor architectures, not individual CPU models—and neither is universally faster or more efficient. For a Windows PC buyer, the practical difference is that Windows 11 on Arm can run native Arm apps and many existing x86 and x64 apps through emulation, but drivers, some games, and specialist software need separate compatibility checks. Compare specific computers and the software you use, rather than choosing on the architecture label alone.

What do Arm and x86 mean?

Arm and x86 describe different instruction-set architectures (ISAs): the instructions and system-level rules that software expects a processor to provide. Arm describes its architecture as including an instruction set, exception model, and memory model relied on by software, operating systems, and hypervisors. Arm’s architecture overview explains the distinction.

The ISA is not the processor’s full design. A processor’s microarchitecture is the implementation that carries out the architecture’s instructions, including choices such as pipeline design and cache. Many companies make Arm-based implementations, with different power, performance, and area targets. Arm calls its architecture RISC; x86 and x64 are another architecture family commonly used in Windows PCs. Those labels alone do not guarantee a particular speed or battery life.

Will existing software run on an Arm PC?

Compatibility depends on the operating system, whether the app has a native build or is supported by translation or emulation, and whether the software relies on hardware drivers. Windows on Arm’s compatibility behavior should not be assumed for every Arm device or operating system.

Windows 11 on Arm: apps

Microsoft says Windows on Arm runs native Arm apps and many unmodified x86 and x64 apps through emulation. Microsoft recommends native Arm apps for the best performance and battery life. Microsoft’s Windows on Arm documentation describes native apps, emulation, and Arm64EC, which can help developers migrate code incrementally while retaining some x64 code and libraries.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 Arm FAQ says most Windows apps can be installed and run. It also says Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism to improve the performance of emulated apps. That is a version-specific feature statement, not a guarantee that every program or plug-in will work equally well. App availability changes, so check the live Windows Arm PC compatibility resource and the software vendor’s current requirements.

Drivers, peripherals, and games

Application emulation does not provide a missing hardware driver. Microsoft says Windows on Arm needs drivers built into Windows or designed for Arm64. This matters for devices and utilities that depend on kernel-level drivers, including some security tools and specialist peripherals. Microsoft also warns that some games using anti-cheat drivers not made for Arm PCs may not work. Check with the device manufacturer or game publisher for the exact product and Windows version.

Microsoft says Windows 11 on Arm supports most printers, including those using Mopria, but recommends checking with the manufacturer when a printer needs a specific driver. Treat “most” as a useful starting point, not a promise about every printer, dock, accessory, or older device.

Does Arm or x86 deliver better performance?

There is no architecture-wide winner established here. Arm implementations vary, and the performance of a complete computer depends on its processor model, cooling, power limits, memory configuration, operating system, and workload. An app running natively may behave differently from one running through emulation, so results from one machine or program do not establish a general ISA advantage.

For a meaningful comparison, look for tests of the actual computers and tasks you care about. Note whether a result is single-core or multi-core, a brief burst or sustained workload, and whether the software ran natively or through emulation. For gaming, account for the GPU, graphics drivers, and whether the specific game and anti-cheat system are supported. For a laptop, consider sustained performance and measured battery life alongside short benchmark scores.

No matched contemporary Arm-versus-x86 benchmark ranking is established by the available sources, so a universal speed or efficiency claim—or a numeric comparison based on architecture alone—would not be justified.

What should you check before buying an Arm Windows laptop?

  1. List the software you depend on. Check each app, plug-in, development tool, and virtualization requirement with its vendor. Find out whether it has a native Arm build or is expected to run under Windows emulation.
  2. Check hardware and drivers separately. Confirm Arm64 driver support for essential printers, docks, security products, and specialist equipment. Do not infer driver compatibility from an app’s ability to run through emulation.
  3. Verify games one by one. Consult the publisher or a current compatibility resource, especially for games that use anti-cheat drivers.
  4. Compare complete systems using relevant tests. Identify the exact processor and computer configuration; look for workload results that state benchmark version, power mode, test duration, and native or emulated execution.
  5. Weigh ongoing use, not just peak speed. Compare sustained performance, cooling, memory, and battery measurements for the machines you are considering.

Arm-based Snapdragon X PCs are one category of Windows on Arm computers, but the architecture label alone does not identify the right model or establish that it beats a particular x86 laptop. The deciding question is whether the specific computer supports your software and devices, and how it performs in your actual workloads.
