Arktos Entertainment Group acquired a majority stake in Hammerpoint Interactive, the studio behind The War Z, according to a GamesBeat report published December 17, 2012. The report did not disclose the deal’s terms. It separately said Arktos had previously invested $4 million in Hammerpoint; that figure was not identified as the acquisition price.

What did Arktos acquire?

GamesBeat reported that Arktos Entertainment Group acquired a majority stake in Hammerpoint Interactive. A majority stake indicates control through ownership, but the report does not give an exact percentage or describe the deal’s legal or financial structure. GamesBeat’s December 17, 2012 report is the source for the transaction details.

Hammerpoint was identified as the developer of The War Z, an online zombie game that GamesBeat said had been released on Valve’s Steam network.

Were the purchase price or other terms disclosed?

No. GamesBeat said the acquisition terms were not disclosed. The report separately described $4 million as seed money Arktos had invested in Hammerpoint before the acquisition. It does not establish that this earlier investment was the purchase price, the valuation of the company, or the amount paid for the majority stake.

Why did Arktos say it made the deal?

The report described a plan to consolidate the development team, intellectual property, and technology under the Hammerpoint brand. Arktos characterized Hammerpoint as its core developer for mid-core and hardcore games. Sergey Titov, identified in the report as Arktos Entertainment’s general partner, said: “Our goal is to create an online games factory.”

Titov also said the decision followed The War Z’s Alpha launch: “We made the decision soon after the launch of War Z’s Alpha to invest more into Hammerpoint and position it as our core developer of mid and hardcore games from this point forward.” These statements describe Arktos’s stated rationale and plans at the time; the report does not establish how fully they were carried out.
