ARK’s Cathie Wood Shuns Memory Chip Stocks Over ‘Vicious’ Cycle Risk

Benzinga reported that Cathie Wood views HBM as cyclical and commoditized, with high prices potentially encouraging chip designers to reduce their dependence on it. The comments are an investment thesis, not a forecast of which stocks will win.

ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood’s reported reason for avoiding memory-dependent AI-chip stocks is that high-bandwidth memory (HBM) may be both highly cyclical and vulnerable to engineering alternatives when prices surge. That is Wood’s investment thesis, not proof that HBM prices will fall or that any particular stock will underperform.

Why Wood is wary of memory-chip exposure

In a report dated August 19, 2026, Benzinga said Wood discussed ARK’s position on Evoke’s The Insightful Investor podcast, hosted by Alex Shahid. Benzinga quoted her describing memory as “the most cyclical part of a semiconductor food chain, the most commoditized.” In her view, exceptional memory-price increases should not automatically be treated as evidence of a lasting advantage for producers: they may instead make the cost of memory an incentive for chip designers to find other approaches.

Wood’s concern is about the economics and design dependence of AI chips, not a claim that demand for AI computing will disappear. A chip that relies on costly HBM may face a different cost and supply risk from a design that does not require it. But the available report does not establish which architecture will prove more competitive, or which companies’ shares will perform better.

Why a price spike could be a warning in this thesis

HBM is a type of DRAM used in some high-performance computing systems. Wood reportedly characterized memory-price increases that triple, quadruple, or rise tenfold as “not the normal state.” Her logic is that an unusually expensive component can spur engineers to reduce, avoid, or replace the need for it. Benzinga quoted her describing that response as “engineering out the need for high bandwidth memory.”

  • Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].

That is a possible industry response, not a demonstrated outcome. An engineering workaround can take time, and the report does not specify which designs, customers, workloads, or timetable would be affected. Nor does a potential reduction in HBM dependence mean that all memory demand or all AI-chip demand would decline. The investment question is whether the expected duration and profitability of high memory prices justify treating them as a lasting advantage.

What the report says about alternatives to HBM

Benzinga reported that Wood favored companies such as Cerebras Systems and Groq, describing their AI chips as not requiring HBM. Those are examples she cited to explain her view, not a technical comparison of their products. The report does not provide specifications, workload tests, customer economics, or evidence that their approaches can replace HBM-based systems broadly.

Wood compared the idea of reducing dependence on a costly input with Tesla’s efforts to engineer cobalt out of batteries. That is an analogy she used, not evidence that HBM substitution will follow the same path or on a similar schedule. Investors should keep the distinction clear: an engineering incentive is not the same as a commercially proven substitute.

How to read the reported market figures

The figures in Benzinga’s August 19, 2026 report describe forecasts and reported company statements, not a complete or independently verified account of future results. Their qualifications matter:

  • DRAM prices: Benzinga attributed to J.P. Morgan a forecast of more than 400% in DRAM price increases from the start of 2024 through the end of 2026. This was a forecast in the August 19, 2026 report, not a statement that the full increase had already occurred.
  • Supply relief: Benzinga reported that Counterpoint Research director MS Hwang did not expect meaningful supply relief before 2028. This was an attributed outlook, not a confirmed date when supply would improve.
  • Producer concentration: The report put Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron together at roughly 90% of global DRAM production. That estimate is attributed to Benzinga’s report and was not independently verified here.
  • Micron agreements and revenue: Benzinga reported 16 long-term customer agreements and roughly $100 billion in cumulative revenue through 2030, citing CEO Sanjay Mehrotra’s description of memory as “a strategic asset” in the AI era. The agreements and revenue figure were not separately checked.

These points can coexist with Wood’s concern: a concentrated supply base, strong demand, or long-term customer commitments may support the case for memory makers, while high prices may also encourage customers and chip designers to reduce dependence on expensive components. Neither side of that tension settles what future earnings or share prices will be.

What this does—and does not—say about ARK’s investments

Benzinga’s account concerns comments attributed to Wood on a podcast. It is not, by itself, a new portfolio disclosure. The report also mentions associated trades as historical; readers should not treat them as a current statement of ARK’s holdings or intended trades.

ARK’s official August 2026 market-update page discusses the firm’s active trading philosophy and includes general fund-risk language, but it does not corroborate Wood’s reported HBM comments. ARK’s disclosures state that investing involves risk, fund objectives may not be achieved, and past performance does not ensure future results. A reported investment thesis should therefore be read as an explanation of one manager’s reasoning—not as a forecast investors can rely on or a substitute for evaluating their own risk tolerance and research.

What consumers should take from the memory story

The story concerns HBM and the semiconductor supply chain, not a direct forecast for the price of consumer computer memory. DRAM price movements may affect a range of electronics, but DDR5 RAM sold for a personal computer is not HBM and is not a direct substitute for the AI-accelerator memory discussed here. A claim about HBM economics should not be used on its own to predict what a particular consumer memory kit will cost.
