Arizona households averaged $4,530 in credit card debt, a nominal record in the series cited by ABC15 dating to 2003. But that is not an inflation-adjusted record: ABC15 reports that the comparable average before the Great Recession was about $5,900 in today’s dollars. The figures describe different ways of comparing balances over time, not a contradiction.
What the $4,530 figure measures
ABC15 Arizona reported the $4,530 figure in 2026, attributing it to New York Fed data. It is an average balance per Arizona household—not total debt across the state and not what every Arizona cardholder owes. ABC15 said credit card balances represented a little over 6% of all household debt in the state and ranked Arizona 16th among states.

Why a nominal record is not a real-dollar record
A nominal balance is stated in the dollars of the time it was measured. Inflation-adjusted, or “real,” figures translate amounts from different years into a common purchasing-power basis. Because prices generally rise over time, the same amount of debt in an earlier year can represent a larger burden in today’s dollars.

ABC15’s comparison puts Arizona’s pre-Great Recession average at approximately $5,900 in today’s money, above the reported $4,530 nominal record. It also says the inflation-adjusted average did not fall below $4,500 until 2011. ABC15’s excerpt does not specify the CPI series or reference month used for that conversion, so the $5,900 should be treated as its reported estimate, not as a calculation independently reproduced here.

These are balance averages, not delinquency rates or direct measures of financial distress. The figures alone do not explain why balances differ among age groups or how many people in each group carry debt.
Delinquency figures are national, not Arizona-specific
ABC15 also reported that about 7% of U.S. credit card accounts were 90 or more days delinquent, compared with an 11% high during the Great Recession. Those are national figures; they should not be read as Arizona’s delinquency rate. A balance statistic and a delinquency rate also answer different questions: one concerns how much is owed, while the other concerns how overdue accounts are.

How to read the broader Federal Reserve figures
Other Federal Reserve statistics provide context but are not direct substitutes for the Arizona household balance figure. The Federal Reserve Board’s May 2026 Financial Stability Report said inflation-adjusted U.S. credit card balances rose modestly among all borrower risk segments in the second half of 2025, using constant 2025 dollars and CPI. That national trend does not verify or refute ABC15’s Arizona historical comparison. Federal Reserve Financial Stability Report
The Board’s G.19 statistical release reported that U.S. revolving consumer credit grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.5% in July 2026. Revolving credit is a broader consumer-credit measure than the state-level credit card household balance statistic, so the two figures should not be combined or treated as equivalent.
