The estimate was a regional forecast of planting intentions—not a national acreage figure or a final result—and is now historical.
What the 2025/26 forecast said
Reuters reported on August 14, 2025, that the Rosario exchange expected farmers in the central crop region to increase corn planting by 15%–20% compared with the prior season. The headline’s “as much as 20%” refers to the upper end of that range. Argentina’s corn planting begins in September, so the report described intentions ahead of the season, not confirmed planted area. Reuters report, hosted by Successful Farming.
For context, the exchange put prior-season planted area at 8.3 million hectares and the harvest at 48.5 million metric tons, figures Reuters relayed in the 2025 report. They are prior-season figures, not the result of the 2025/26 forecast.
Why the exchange expected more corn
The exchange cited two factors that could make corn more attractive to farmers: strong soil-moisture reserves supporting early sowing, and tighter soybean profit margins. Because corn and soybeans compete for summer-crop acreage, weaker expected returns for soybeans could encourage some growers to allocate more land to corn. These were the exchange’s stated reasons for its forecast, not proof that the increase ultimately occurred.

The main risk: corn leafhopper in the north
The exchange warned that corn leafhopper could again cause problems in northern Argentina. The insect transmits diseases that damage corn; Reuters noted severe losses in the 2023/24 season after a major increase in the pest’s population. This northern risk was a caveat to the outlook, not a separate estimate of how much acreage would be lost or a reversal of the central-region planting forecast.
A separate, later outlook for 2026/27
The Rosario exchange’s preliminary outlook published September 18, 2026, put national corn planting intentions for 2026/27 at 10.6 million hectares, 4% below 2025/26. It said 8.9 million hectares were intended for commercial grain. These are later national figures, and the commercial-grain area is a subset of the total intention; neither is directly comparable to the 15%–20% regional increase forecast for 2025/26.
