Enzo Fernández’s reported 2026 move from Chelsea to Manchester City is currently the highest-fee transfer reported for an Argentine player. The reported price varies by outlet: Deportv says €146 million, ESPN €145 million and TyC Sports €140 million. Those figures are claims in published reports, not a single confirmed fee.
A reliable list of 12 distinct players cannot be established from the available rankings: they include repeat transactions for the same players, and the evidence does not verify the final places in a unique-player top 12. The ranking below therefore covers the distinct players and notable fee reports that can be supported, without inventing two names or fees.
How this ranking works
This is a ranking of distinct Argentine players by their highest reported single transfer fee, not a count of transfer transactions. A player appears once even if they moved for a large fee more than once. Figures are kept in the currencies and accounting terms used by the cited outlets; they are not adjusted for inflation, exchange rates, add-ons or differences in reporting methods.
The available reporting does not establish a complete, consistently sourced top 12 of distinct players. The entries below are the highest supported player records and other reported fees identified in the rankings reviewed; they should not be read as a verified 12-place list.

Highest reported fees for distinct Argentine players
-
Enzo Fernández — Chelsea to Manchester City, 2026
This is the current reported record, but outlets disagree on the amount. Deportv reports €146 million (Deportv); ESPN reports €145 million (ESPN); and TyC Sports reports €140 million (TyC Sports). Because the reports conflict, none should be presented as a universally confirmed figure.
-
Gonzalo Higuaín — Napoli to Juventus, 2016
ESPN lists the fee at €90 million (ESPN). This is a widely reported figure, but it remains a published transfer value rather than a claim verified here against a transfer contract.
-
Julián Álvarez — Manchester City to Atlético Madrid, 2024
The reported total depends on how the fee is counted. ESPN’s ranking lists €75 million, while its accompanying account describes €70 million fixed plus possible variables that could take the total to €90 million (ESPN). Other reports cited in that ranking put the fee at €70 million or €75 million. The fixed amount and conditional add-ons should not be collapsed into one definite price.
-
Ángel Di María — Real Madrid to Manchester United, 2014
ESPN lists €75 million, while TN reports €85 million (ESPN; TN). The source difference means the amounts are best treated as competing published estimates.

-
Lisandro Martínez — Ajax to Manchester United, 2022
ESPN lists €57.4 million; TN also includes the transfer in its ranking (ESPN; TN).

Hernán Crespo — Parma to Lazio, 2000
ESPN reports €56.8 million, while TyC Sports gives $55 million (ESPN; TyC Sports). These are different currencies and publisher figures; comparing them requires an exchange-rate date and methodology that these reports do not provide.
-
Cristian Romero — Atalanta to Tottenham, 2022
ESPN lists €53.8 million, TN €50 million and TyC Sports about €55 million (ESPN; TN; TyC Sports). The estimates differ, so no single exact amount is established by these sources.

TN and TyC Sports report €50 million (TN; TyC Sports). The outlets’ figures may involve rounding.
Why Fernández’s earlier Chelsea move is not another player
Fernández’s 2023 move from Benfica to Chelsea was reported at €121 million by ESPN (ESPN). It appears as another transaction in transfer-based lists, but a distinct-player ranking counts Fernández once and uses his highest reported fee.
Di María is also repeated in transaction lists: ESPN reports €63 million for his 2015 move from Manchester United to Paris Saint-Germain, in addition to the 2014 Real Madrid-to-United transfer (ESPN). Counting both transfers as separate players would inflate a list of players rather than rank people.
Why the fees are difficult to compare
- Different accounting: A fixed fee is not the same as a maximum that includes conditional add-ons, as the reports on Álvarez illustrate.
- Different currencies: Crespo’s transfer is reported in euros by ESPN and dollars by TyC Sports; a direct comparison requires a stated conversion basis.
- Different source methods: ESPN says its ranking uses Transfermarkt values. Other outlets may present different estimates or round figures differently.
- Nominal amounts: The historical figures here are not inflation-adjusted, so they compare reported amounts at the time rather than equivalent purchasing power.
Why Lionel Messi is not on a paid-transfer ranking
The reports describe Messi’s moves as free-agent transfers rather than paid transfers, so he is absent from fee rankings. That is a distinction about transfer cost, not an assessment of his sporting importance.
