Argentina’s 2026/27 Wheat Planting Got Off to a Fast Start

Argentina’s 2026/27 wheat planting was ahead of recent comparisons by June 4, but later weather updates and differing area and production forecasts show why the early pace was not a final result.

Argentina’s wheat planting was moving quickly in early June 2026: by June 4, farmers had planted 32.4% of the projected 6.5 million hectares for the 2026/27 campaign. That was an 18.2-percentage-point advance in a week, and the pace was ahead of both the previous campaign and the five-year average. It was an early-season snapshot, not a final measure of planted area or production.

How quickly was planting advancing?

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange’s weekly report, as reported by fyo on June 4, 2026, put progress at 32.4% of a projected 6.5 million hectares. Planting had advanced 18.2 percentage points in the prior week, placing it 8.8 points ahead of the same point in the 2025/26 campaign and 12.4 points above the average for the previous five campaigns. The exchange associated the rapid fieldwork with favorable moisture availability. Source: fyo’s June 4 report on the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange update.

These percentages describe progress on that date, measured against the exchange’s projected area. They do not mean that 32.4% of the final area was known, or that the same pace continued throughout the season.

Why the early pace did not guarantee an on-schedule season

Rain helped, but conditions differed by region

The Rosario exchange’s June 10 account added a weather wrinkle: dry conditions in May had helped accelerate planting but raised concern about drying topsoil. June rain then improved soil-moisture reserves across major wheat provinces. Its account described planting progress at 34%, a separate estimate from the June 4 Buenos Aires Grain Exchange figure. Bolsa de Comercio de Rosario / GEA, June 10, 2026.

Excess water slowed some work in July

By July, Argentina’s national weather service, the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, reported that wheat sowing had advanced in Buenos Aires but was delayed by excess water in many areas. It described wheat in Córdoba, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, and La Pampa as developing favorably and in the growth stage. The later update illustrates why the early-June description of a “good pace” should be read as a dated snapshot, not a countrywide season-long status. What do the area and production estimates say?

Published estimates differed, reflecting separate dates and outlooks rather than a settled final result:

Publisher and date Area figure Production figure What it represents
Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, May 2026 6.5 million hectares 21.3 million tonnes Initial campaign projection; the exchange described production as potentially the third-largest Argentine wheat crop. Exchange report.
USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, 2026 Argentina Grain and Feed Annual not stated in the cited forecast summary 20.7 million tonnes Forecast for marketing year 2026/27, 25% below MY 2025/26. USDA FAS annual report.
Bolsa de Comercio de Rosario / GEA, June 10, 2026 6.82 million hectares 20 million tonnes Later area estimate and production scenario. Rosario / GEA outlook.

The 6.5-million-hectare and 6.82-million-hectare figures are projections from different publishers and dates, not competing final tallies. Likewise, the three production figures are forecasts or scenarios, not harvested results. When comparing them, check the publisher, publication date, campaign or marketing-year definition, whether area means planted or harvested area, and the yield and weather assumptions behind the estimate.

Why forecasts anticipated a smaller crop than the previous season

USDA FAS forecast yield at 3.2 tonnes per hectare for MY 2026/27, down from 4.3 tonnes per hectare in MY 2025/26. It characterized the new forecast as above historical averages but below the prior season’s exceptional result. The agency expected yield normalization while area remained broadly similar, helping explain its lower production forecast. USDA FAS yield outlook.

USDA FAS also identified risks rather than confirmed outcomes: tight or negative farm returns in some cases, rising fuel and fertilizer costs, rainfall risks associated with possible El Niño conditions, and potential late-season disease effects on yield and grain quality. It noted that favorable soil moisture and adequate winter rainfall could partly offset reduced fertilizer use. Those factors could influence planting and crop results, but the report does not establish what ultimately happened.

What is and is not established

The available figures establish that planting began at a notably rapid pace relative to the cited comparisons and that estimates later differed on area and production. They do not establish final 2026/27 planted area, yield, production, or harvest results. Ramiro Costa, general manager of the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, described the outlook in May as economically tight, while saying small changes in economic variables could materially affect planting and investment decisions. That is one reason projections should not be mistaken for final outcomes. Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, May 2026.
