What Argentina’s seven-year high measures
The headline figure is 10.5 million metric tons of soybean exports expected for the 2024/25 season, attributed by Reuters to government data. Reuters compared it with the previous reported high of 10.1 million metric tons in 2018/19. The official series available to Reuters went back to 2017/18; the Agriculture Secretariat did not immediately say whether the new figure was an all-time high. Reuters
Declared export sales, a season export estimate and completed shipments are different measures. A declaration records a sale registered for export; it does not establish that the shipment has already left Argentina. The figure therefore supports a seven-year-high comparison in the reported series, not an independently verified all-time shipping record.
Did Argentina suspend soy export taxes?
Yes. In September 2025, Argentina temporarily suspended export duties on soybeans, corn, wheat and their by-products. The waiver was due to end on October 31, 2025, or earlier if declared export sales reached $7 billion. The ceiling was reached, and duties returned. Reuters

The government’s stated aim, as Reuters reported it, was to accelerate foreign sales and bring dollars into Argentina amid pressure on the peso. That policy rationale does not establish that the suspension itself stabilized the currency. Reuters
How the pause accelerated soybean sales
With duties temporarily at zero, exporters had an incentive to register sales during the waiver. The $7 billion cap was reached rapidly: the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service reported 2.7 million metric tons of soybean export declarations on September 24, 2025, and said the cap was reached within 72 hours. Reuters reported that some exporters registered sales before fully buying the soybeans they needed to deliver. That helps explain why trading and sourcing could continue after duties returned: declarations made during the waiver did not necessarily mean exporters had finished acquiring the goods. Rosario-based agribusiness expert Lorena D’Angelo told Reuters that buyers still needed to source declared goods and that activity could remain busy even as it slowed. Reuters
Why Chinese buyers moved quickly—and what the ‘frenzy’ meant
Reuters reported increased Chinese demand during the pause and described purchases for November shipment. Johnny Xiang, founder of Beijing-based AgRadar Consulting, characterized the response to low prices as “a brief frenzy.” This is an attributed market assessment, not a measured description of all Chinese buying. Reuters also reported, citing sources, that India bought 300,000 metric tons of Argentine soyoil during the pause. That was a reported purchase of processed soybean oil, not soybean exports, and the deal should not be counted as soybean tonnage. Reuters
What the tax pause cost in implementation pressure
The speed of the change created trade-offs. Santiago del Solar, identified by Reuters as a leading Argentine farming figure, said: “Setting export duties at zero percent from one day to the next created a tremendous bottleneck.” His comment describes an industry concern about the abrupt measure and pressure on prices; it is not an independently measured estimate of the policy’s effects. The episode thus involved competing priorities: the government sought faster exports and foreign-currency inflows, while farming-sector voices raised concerns about the abrupt change and its effect on the trading process and prices.

The September 2025 suspension was a brief, capped measure that ended when the $7 billion ceiling was met. It is separate from Argentina’s June 3, 2026 announcement of progressive export-duty reductions under Decree 423/2026. That later schedule covers soy, corn, sunflower, sorghum and by-products from January 2027 through December 2028. The announcement alone does not establish the precise applicable rates; those require checking the decree and its annexes. Argentina.gob.ar
