Heavy rain in Argentina’s agricultural core region improved prospects for the 2024/25 wheat, corn and soybean crops after drought, according to a Rosario grains exchange assessment reported by Reuters on October 24, 2024. The effects differed by crop: wheat was nearing harvest after a cut to its estimate, while corn and soybean planting had been delayed or slowed.
What the rain changed
The Rosario grains exchange said 30–90 millimeters of rain had fallen across much of the agricultural core region in the 24 hours before its assessment. Reuters reported the exchange’s view that the rainfall had changed the outlook after dry conditions.
Cristian Russo, the exchange’s head of agricultural estimates, described the shift with a soccer score: “We were losing 3-0 against the drought. With the rains last week we were 3-2, and with what is happening now we would be winning 4-3,” Reuters reported.

All estimates and crop-stage details in the table are the Rosario grains exchange’s assessments as reported by Reuters in October 2024; the underlying exchange report was not retrieved independently. Reuters described Argentina at the time as the world’s third-largest corn exporter and a key wheat supplier, as well as the top exporter of processed soy oil and meal. Those trade descriptions reflect the October 2024 report and are not current rankings.

What the estimates do—and do not—show
The rainfall improved the reported outlook, but the figures were not all revised in the same way. The wheat estimate had already been reduced to 19.5 million metric tons earlier in October; the report gave corn and soybean harvest or production forecasts of 51–52 million tons and 52–53 million tons, respectively. The Reuters account does not establish a new post-rain estimate for any of the three crops.
