Cate Blanchett said she received no backend participation for The Lord of the Rings and joked that she “basically got free sandwiches” and kept her elf ears. But her exact salary has not been reported in the available coverage: her line that “no one got paid anything” was her comic description of the experience, not a published contract figure.
What Blanchett said about her pay
During an August 7, 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, host Andy Cohen guessed that The Lord of the Rings had earned Blanchett her biggest movie paycheck. Blanchett responded, “Are you kidding me?” and said, “No, no one got paid anything to do that movie.”
When Cohen asked whether she had received backend participation, Blanchett answered, “No! That was way before any of that. No, nothing.” She said she wanted to work with “the guy who made ‘Braindead’” and added, “I mean, I basically got free sandwiches, and I got to keep my [elf] ears.” The Los Angeles Times, Variety, The Independent, and Us Weekly reported the exchange.
Did Cate Blanchett literally earn nothing?
The reports do not disclose Blanchett’s salary or provide a contract record. Her remarks establish that she described the pay as negligible and denied receiving backend participation; they do not establish that she literally received zero dollars. The “free sandwiches” line was a joke, not a compensation statement with a verifiable amount.

The interview exchange focused on the original Lord of the Rings films, but the reported coverage does not give a separate pay figure for either trilogy.

The reported numbers concern different things: a co-star’s reported pay and the trilogy’s box-office gross. Neither establishes Blanchett’s compensation.
| Figure | What it refers to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| $175,000 | Orlando Bloom’s reported compensation for all three films, according to the Los Angeles Times and Variety in 2024. | Blanchett’s pay or the compensation of the full cast. The outlets’ accounts differ on the year of Bloom’s earlier interview, so no interview year is given here. |
| $2.9 billion worldwide | The trilogy’s gross, reported by the Los Angeles Times and Variety. | How much the films’ actors earned, whether they received backend participation, or how revenue was divided. |
Blanchett also said, “Women don’t get paid as much as you think they do.” That is her observation in the interview, not a quantified finding: the cited reports do not supply a study or measured statistic to support a pay-gap figure.
