What recent watch-market data shows
Watch prices can rise over one period and fall over another. The result depends on the index, the watches it tracks and the dates being compared—not on a guarantee that an individual watch will appreciate.
Recent index movements point in different directions
WatchCharts’ mid-year 2025 analysis estimated that its overall secondary-market index fell 0.4% in Q1 2025 and 0.3% in Q2; 29 of the 35 Swiss brands it tracked declined in Q2. The same analysis put the index about 20% higher nominally over five years, while U.S. inflation over that period exceeded 25%, leaving the index lower in real terms. The WatchCharts Overall Market Index page, last updated September 22, 2026, showed a five-year change of -5.3% and a one-year change of +8.6%. Its basket comprises 300 watches from 10 major tracked brands, weighted by transaction value. The contrasting windows illustrate why a single headline percentage can mislead; neither figure is an individual owner’s net investment return. Brand averages do not predict a specific reference
In its August 2025 analysis, WatchCharts said Rolex and Patek Philippe were trading above retail on average, while Audemars Piguet had moved into negative average value-retention territory in Q2 2025. It also described differences between sports and dress watches. These are time-specific averages, not evidence that every model from those brands can be bought below its eventual resale price. A brand name alone is not an investment case.
Why auction records are not a typical buyer’s return
Rare watches can command exceptional prices, but those sales represent a selected part of the market. Phillips reported that its May 2026 Geneva sale totaled CHF 74,846,995, with 224 of 225 lots sold and 43 world records; a Patek Philippe Ref. 2523 sold for CHF 7,961,000. Phillips also reported US$212,319,367 in watch auction sales in its 2024 year review. These figures show activity among high-value collectibles, not the return an ordinary owner should expect. How to assess a watch’s resale prospects
If resale value matters, assess the exact reference and your likely net proceeds—not a brand’s reputation or a price guide’s headline estimate. A guide or index can help track a market, but it cannot promise that a buyer will pay its displayed figure.
- Check completed sales for the exact reference. Compare recent realized prices with current asking prices; an asking price is not proof of a completed sale.
- Compare your purchase price with the secondary market. Note whether you are paying above or below retail and how that gap could affect an eventual exit.
- Evaluate the individual watch. Condition, originality, box and papers, provenance, authenticity and seller protections can affect both value and the ability to resell.
- Account for ownership and exit costs. Include servicing and repairs, insurance, taxes, shipping, authentication and selling fees. The amount you net can be materially different from a market quote.
- Consider liquidity and time. A watch may have a quoted market price without a ready buyer at that price. Allow for how long a sale may take and the possibility of accepting less.
Costs and legal or tax treatment vary by location and sales route. The available market data does not provide a comprehensive, buyer-by-buyer net-return calculation or jurisdiction-specific tax advice, so calculate your own likely costs rather than treating index movement as a personal forecast.

When buying a watch can still make sense
A luxury watch can be worthwhile as a personal purchase or collectible if you value wearing it, owning it or studying its history, and can afford the cost without relying on appreciation. In that case, resale value is a possible consideration—not the reason the purchase must succeed. There is not enough evidence here to identify a particular model as a dependable investment or to conclude that watches outperform diversified financial investments.
