Walmart identified bananas, avocados, and coffee as imported foods facing tariff pressure in May 2025, but the available evidence does not show that the retailer is broadly hiking prices on essential groceries now—or how much of any particular price change tariffs caused. Walmart has said it tries to keep food prices low while acknowledging that it may pass on costs when necessary.
Which groceries did Walmart say faced tariff pressure?
On its May 15, 2025 earnings call, Walmart said tariffs affecting countries including Costa Rica, Peru, and Colombia were pressuring the cost of imported bananas, avocados, and coffee. That distinction matters: pressure on an imported ingredient or product does not establish that its shelf price rose by the same amount, or that a price change was caused by tariffs alone.
Did Walmart raise prices in 2025?
The Associated Press reported that Walmart said prices began increasing in late April 2025 and rose further in May. AP also reported 7,400 temporary price rollbacks during the quarter ended July 31, 2025. Separately, Walmart’s Q1 FY26 earnings release reported more than 5,000 price rollbacks across its U.S. assortment. It also reported a 60-basis-point year-over-year increase in grocery private-brand penetration. Taken together, the reports describe competing price pressures and discounts—not a verified, storewide grocery-price trend. The sources do not provide a current Walmart grocery-basket inflation figure or a tariff-specific price change for named foods.

How can tariffs affect a grocery bill?
A tariff can raise the cost of an imported product or an input used to produce it. But the shelf-price effect depends on more than the tariff: suppliers and retailers may absorb some costs, change sourcing, adjust package sizes or product mix, or pass costs on. Transport expenses, commodity prices, inflation, and other supply-chain factors can also affect what shoppers pay.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on the May 15, 2025 call, “We won’t let tariff-related cost pressure on some general merchandise items put pressure on food prices.” In the same remarks, Walmart acknowledged tariff pressure on particular imported foods. The statement expresses the company’s intended approach; it is not a promise that food prices cannot rise.

What does Walmart say it does when costs rise?
Walmart’s 2025 annual report describes a range of possible responses: absorbing cost increases, reducing prices in some categories, emphasizing opening price points for certain foods, and passing costs on when necessary. It also says the company may work with suppliers, focus more on private brands and smaller pack sizes, and adjust purchasing. On the May 2025 earnings call, Walmart also described controlling fresh-food waste, managing the mix of products across items and departments, and shifting some production or materials where possible. As a result, a higher cost for one source or input need not translate into a matching increase on one corresponding shelf item.

Walmart’s April 2026 SEC-filed quarterly report continued to list tariffs and trade restrictions alongside inflation, currency changes, consumer confidence, employment, fuel prices, and supply-chain pressures as uncertainties that could affect its results. Compare the price for the same quantity and product type rather than relying only on the package total. A store brand or smaller package may be a useful alternative, but it is not automatically the better value; check the local shelf or app price and the unit price.

- Compare unit prices for equivalent products and package sizes.
- Check private-brand alternatives, while confirming that the product and quantity are comparable.
- Look at local availability and the final online price, including delivery or membership fees where applicable.
This is a way to evaluate the price available to you—not a way to determine whether a tariff caused a change.
Do digital shelf labels mean Walmart is using personalized prices?
No conclusion about tariff-driven increases or personalized pricing follows simply from the use of electronic shelf labels. The Associated Press reported on September 27, 2026 that Walmart was expanding digital shelf labels. AP also reported CEO John Furner’s pledge: “We don’t set different prices based on who you are or the time of day, and we won’t.” That is the CEO’s stated policy, not independent verification of every pricing practice. Digital labels allow prices to be updated; their presence by itself does not show why a price changed or establish that customers see individualized prices.
