Re:

Are U.S. Car Repossessions Rising? What the Latest Data Shows

Cox Automotive’s estimate points to a sharp rise in U.S. repossessions since 2022, but assignments, active repossession status and delinquency are different measures.

Yes. The available evidence points to a substantial rise in U.S. vehicle repossessions since 2022, but there is no single, comprehensive national repossession rate. Cox Automotive estimated that repossessions in 2024 were 43% higher than in 2022 and at their highest estimated level since 2009, while separate government figures measure lender assignments, active repossession status or loan delinquency—not the same thing.

What the figures say about repossessions

The strongest recent national trend estimate identified here comes from Cox Automotive, as reported by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA). Cox estimated that repossessions rose 43% from 2022 to 2024, reaching the highest estimated level since 2009. This is an industry estimate relayed by a consumer advocacy organization, not a complete official count of vehicles repossessed nationwide. CFA’s report on the estimate.

A separate Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) analysis tracked accounts with activity at nine major auto lenders from 2018 through 2022. In that sample, 0.75% of outstanding vehicle loans were assigned to repossession in December 2022, compared with 0.61% in December 2019. These are monthly assignment figures within the studied lender sample; they do not show the national share of cars actually taken back. CFPB’s January 2024 findings.

Why there is no single repossession “rate”

Repossession data are limited, and the word “rate” can refer to different stages of the process. The CFPB notes that publicly available repossession data are much more limited than data for other credit markets. The agency’s auto-loan research and its lender analysis measure different things, so their percentages should not be treated as interchangeable.

Measure What it counts Example and scope
Estimated completed repossessions An estimate of vehicles repossessed over a period Cox Automotive estimated a 43% increase from 2022 to 2024, as reported by CFA; not a comprehensive official count.
Assignment to repossession Loans a lender assigns for repossession, whether or not a vehicle is ultimately taken CFPB’s nine-lender sample: 0.75% of outstanding vehicle loans in December 2022 versus 0.61% in December 2019.
Active repossession status Balances attached to loans currently in repossession status A Federal Reserve analysis of a Buy-Here-Pay-Here (BHPH) proxy sample reported about 5% of balances in active repossession status at Q3 2025, versus less than 0.5% for traditional auto-lender balances.
Serious delinquency Balances transitioning into a serious-delinquency category—not repossessions New York Fed: an annualized 2.95% transition rate for auto balances in Q4 2025, versus 2.96% in Q4 2024.

The measures also differ in time period, population and denominator: some count loans or accounts, while others refer to loan balances. The New York Fed’s delinquency figure is not evidence that repossessions fell or rose by the same amount. It describes a different outcome for a different measure. Why borrowers may be under greater payment pressure

Higher vehicle costs and larger loans can make monthly payments harder to manage, but the available evidence does not identify a single cause for every repossession. In a Federal Reserve analysis, the increase in monthly auto payments over the period studied was driven substantially by larger loan amounts, not interest rates alone. From 2020 Q1 to 2023 Q3, loan size grew more than 20%, while median nominal earnings rose 15%. The analysis also discusses lender approvals and shifts in originations among lender types; these are market-level explanations, not a complete causal account of repossessions. Federal Reserve analysis of auto payments and delinquency.

As then-CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said in the agency’s January 2024 release, “Supply chain shocks and higher interest rates drove up costs to purchase and finance a car,” the CFPB stated. Those pressures help explain the broader cost environment, but they do not establish why any individual borrower fell behind.

The size of the market adds context, not a direct measure of repossession. The CFPB reported more than $1.64 trillion in outstanding auto-loan balances through Q3 2024 and over 100 million active auto-finance accounts. By Q4 2025, the New York Fed put auto-loan balances at $1.67 trillion. Neither balance total tells you how many vehicles were repossessed. CFPB auto-loan research; New York Fed, Q4 2025.

Repossession risk varies by lending segment

Borrowers’ experiences can differ across types of auto lenders. In a Federal Reserve analysis, about 5% of balances in a Q3 2025 BHPH proxy sample were in active repossession status, compared with less than 0.5% of traditional auto-lender balances. BHPH financing commonly serves borrowers with lower credit scores and higher delinquency rates, and may involve higher interest rates and more frequent repayments. The comparison is specific to the paper’s proxy sample; it is not a national rate for every BHPH lender or all auto loans. Federal Reserve note on BHPH auto loans.

What repossession can mean for a borrower

Losing a vehicle can disrupt work and other daily responsibilities, and the loan may not be settled when the car is taken. After sale, the borrower may still owe a remaining balance along with fees. In the CFPB’s nine-lender data, consumers who still owed money after repossession had an average remaining balance exceeding $11,000 in December 2022. That figure describes the agency’s sample, not a typical amount for every borrower. CFPB’s lender analysis.

CFPB complaint reporting also describes borrowers who said they could not get help after job loss or illness, whose vehicles were repossessed despite claimed payment arrangements or automatic payments, and who reported damage by tow operators or difficulty retrieving personal property. These are consumer allegations summarized by the agency, not findings that every complaint was substantiated. CFPB’s complaint snapshot.

What to do if you are at risk or dispute a repossession

  • Contact the lender promptly if you expect to miss a payment or have already fallen behind. Ask what options, if any, are available and request the terms in writing.
  • Keep copies of payment confirmations, account statements, messages and any payment arrangement. If a payment was made or an arrangement was agreed, records can help you explain a dispute.
  • If the vehicle is sold and you are told you still owe money, request an itemized accounting of the charges, sale proceeds and remaining balance.
  • If you dispute the repossession, fees, vehicle condition or access to personal property, keep relevant records and seek legal help familiar with your state’s current rules. Notice, cure, redemption and personal-property requirements can vary by jurisdiction; the sources cited here do not establish a nationwide rule.

How to interpret the next headline about repossessions

Check what is being counted before comparing a new figure with an older one: completed repossessions, lender assignments, active status and delinquency answer different questions. Also check the period, the population covered and whether the denominator is loans, accounts or balances. That distinction makes it possible to recognize the documented rise without treating a limited sample or an estimate as a definitive national rate.
