Re:

Are Southwest, American, Delta and United Delays Soaring? What the FAA’s Actions Actually Show

The documented FAA emergency flight reductions ended in November 2025. A separate 2026 slot waiver is limited to three airports and does not prove delays are soaring at the four airlines.

Current evidence does not establish that delays at Southwest, American, Delta or United are soaring as of October 8, 2026, or that the FAA has put a new nationwide flight-cutback order in place. The documented emergency reductions were imposed during the 2025 government shutdown and ended on November 17, 2025. A separate FAA-related measure scheduled to begin October 25, 2026, is limited slot-usage relief at three airports—not a national flight-reduction order.

Are delays at the four airlines rising right now?

The available figures do not show whether Southwest, American, Delta or United currently has rising delay rates. They are either historical systemwide data or industry-reported totals from a specific period; neither provides a current, like-for-like comparison among the four airlines.

That distinction matters: a large disruption reported during a past event cannot establish that delays are soaring today. To judge a particular trip, check its current status with the airline and consult current FAA airport-status information. The historical figures below provide context, not a live delay report.

What happened during the 2025 FAA flight reductions?

During the 2025 government shutdown, the FAA ordered flight reductions at 40 airports. On November 12, the FAA said it would hold the reductions at 6 percent while monitoring controller staffing. The preceding schedule had called for progressively larger cuts, reaching 10 percent by November 14.

On November 16, the FAA announced that the emergency order would end at 6 a.m. the next day, allowing normal operations to resume across the National Airspace System. The agency cited a decline in staffing-trigger events and a safety review. This was a dated emergency measure, not evidence of a current October 2026 order.

How large were the reported shutdown-period disruptions?

Airlines for America (A4A), an airline trade group, reported the following member-airline figures in testimony at a U.S. Senate hearing. They cover November 7–12, 2025, and describe staffing-related disruption during that historical window.

Measure Reported figure Scope and attribution
Staffing-related delays More than 15,600 A4A member-airline data cited in Senate hearing testimony; November 7–12, 2025
Staffing-related cancellations More than 7,100 A4A member-airline data cited in Senate hearing testimony; November 7–12, 2025
Passengers affected 2.3 million A4A member-airline estimate cited in the same testimony and for the same period

These are industry-reported totals for a shutdown-related disruption, not current delay rates for each airline. They should not be read as a ranking or comparison of Southwest, American, Delta and United.

What does the FAA’s October 2026 slot relief mean?

A DOT notice describes a staffing-related waiver of slot-usage requirements at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA). The specified relief periods begin October 25, 2026, and extend into October 2027.

Slot-usage relief at those three airports is narrower than an order directing nationwide flight reductions. Its existence does not establish that the four named airlines have rising delays or that the FAA has imposed current systemwide cutbacks.

What can cause delays besides controller staffing?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) identifies weather and mechanical problems as possible causes of delays and notes that a delay can grow as conditions change. The FAA also reported historical 2024 systemwide delay-cause shares in a statement: weather accounted for 62 percent, volume for 19 percent, runway capacity for 17 percent and air traffic controller staffing for 0.6 percent.

Those percentages describe the FAA’s 2024 systemwide data, not current rates and not the performance of any one airline. They also use a different scope and method from A4A’s shutdown-period counts, so the two sets of figures cannot be combined into one comparison.

What should you do if your flight is delayed?

  1. Check the airline’s flight status. Confirm the latest departure or arrival information with the carrier, since conditions can change and a delay may lengthen.
  2. Check airport conditions. Consult current FAA airport-status information for operational updates relevant to your airport.
  3. Review the carrier’s commitments for controllable disruptions. DOT’s customer-service dashboard lists American, Delta, Southwest and United and describes their commitments. It is not a live delay tracker; the page says it was last updated September 11, 2025.
  4. Use the stated cause and your airline’s policy when considering next steps. The available information does not establish a single remedy for every delay, so check the applicable carrier commitment and the circumstances of your disruption.
