Small finance bank fixed deposits are covered by deposit insurance when the specific bank is insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC). The limit is ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and accrued interest, for deposits held in the same right and capacity. That is a capped safety net—not a guarantee that every balance is protected, that a bank is financially risk-free, or that funds will always be immediately accessible.
Are small finance bank FDs safe?
A fixed deposit at a small finance bank can have DICGC protection, but the protection depends on the exact institution being insured and the total eligible deposits you hold there. DICGC includes small finance banks among the commercial banks covered by its scheme. Its current insured-bank list, which displayed an update date of September 22, 2026, is the place to verify a named bank; do not rely on the category label alone.

Even for an insured bank, the cover has a ceiling. If your principal and accrued interest together exceed ₹5 lakh at that bank in the same ownership capacity, the amount above the ceiling is not insured. Nor does insurance establish that a particular bank is currently strong or that there are no restrictions affecting withdrawals. It is more accurate to say an eligible deposit is “covered up to the DICGC limit” than to call the deposit risk-free or fully guaranteed.

The current ₹5 lakh limit took effect on February 4, 2020, according to DICGC’s overview. The insurance premium is paid by the insured bank. The depositor does not buy a separate policy for each FD.

What DICGC deposit insurance covers
DICGC’s FAQ identifies savings, fixed, current and recurring deposits as eligible deposit types, subject to the scheme’s rules and exclusions. Thus, an FD is within an insured deposit category; that does not mean every investment or financial product offered by, sold through, or associated with a bank is insured. Check that the money is held as an eligible deposit with the insured bank.
The cap combines principal and interest. DICGC’s FAQ states: “The DICGC insures principal and interest upto a maximum amount of ₹ 5 lakh.” The practical consequence is that a principal amount below ₹5 lakh can still cross the cap as interest accrues. The uninsured portion is not made insured simply because it is interest rather than principal.
How the ₹5 lakh limit is calculated
The limit is per depositor, per insured bank, for deposits held in the same right and capacity. DICGC combines eligible balances across deposit types and branches at that bank. Opening several FDs, or spreading money among different branches of one bank, does not create several ₹5 lakh limits.

| Several eligible deposits at one bank, held by the same depositor in the same capacity | Balances are aggregated, including principal and accrued interest; the total insured amount is capped at ₹5 lakh. |
| Eligible deposits at separate insured banks | The ₹5 lakh limit applies separately at each bank. |
| Deposits at different branches of one bank | Branches do not have separate limits; balances in the same capacity are combined. |
| Deposits involving joint or representative ownership arrangements | DICGC recognises distinctions between some capacities, but the result depends on the specific arrangement; do not assume every separately named account creates another cap. |
For example, suppose an eligible depositor has ₹4.8 lakh in principal and ₹15,000 in accrued interest at one insured bank, all in the same capacity. The combined ₹4.95 lakh is below the stated limit. If the principal is already ₹5 lakh, accrued interest takes the balance above the ceiling; the excess is not insured. These are illustrations of the rule, not predictions of a particular FD’s future interest.

When checking your own total, use the relevant bank-wide balance rather than looking at an FD in isolation. A savings balance, recurring deposit and fixed deposit can all contribute to the same aggregate if they belong to the same depositor in the same right and capacity. The number of accounts and the number of branches do not change the cap. Accrued interest matters too, so a balance that begins below ₹5 lakh may later exceed it even if you do not add new principal.
How to check your coverage before opening or renewing an FD
- Confirm the exact bank. Look up the institution’s name in DICGC’s current official list of insured banks. Check the named legal institution rather than assuming an entity is covered because it is described as a small finance bank. The list reviewed for this article displayed an update date of September 22, 2026; check the live list when making a decision because listings and circumstances can change.
- Add your balances at that bank. Include eligible savings, fixed, current and recurring deposits, not just the FD you are considering. Combine balances across branches and add accrued interest. Use the same depositor and capacity that apply to the deposits.
- Compare the total with ₹5 lakh. Treat the cap as covering principal plus interest, not principal alone. If a balance is near the limit, future accrued interest can take the combined amount over it.
- Check whether separate accounts really have separate capacities. Multiple accounts in the same right and capacity at one bank aggregate. Joint and representative arrangements can have distinct treatment in some cases, but names on account records alone are not enough to assume a fresh limit. For an unusual ownership structure, consult DICGC’s detailed FAQ or ask the bank to explain how it is recorded.
- Check for current access restrictions. DICGC cover and a bank’s present ability to process withdrawals are different questions. Before relying on access to an FD, check current official notices or directions affecting that bank and ask the bank what applies to your account.
It can help to make a simple inventory before renewing or placing a deposit: record the bank, account or deposit type, depositor name and capacity, principal, and accrued interest. Then total deposits bank by bank. This makes it easier to spot when several apparently separate accounts actually count toward one ceiling, or when an existing balance leaves little room under the cap for an additional FD and its interest.
Does spreading FDs across banks increase protection?
Yes, in the specific sense that the limit applies separately to deposits at different insured banks. If eligible deposits are held at two separate insured banks, each bank has its own per-depositor cap, subject to the same principal-plus-interest and capacity rules. By contrast, dividing a balance among several FDs or branches of one bank does not multiply that bank’s limit.
This is a way to avoid concentrating more than the insured cap at a single bank; it is not a guarantee of a particular return or a complete risk-management strategy. It does not make balances above a bank’s cap insured, assess a bank’s financial health, or remove possible access delays or restrictions. DICGC’s scheme rules establish coverage mechanics, not a comparative solvency rating or a recommendation about which institution to choose.

If you are comparing two deposit setups, check the same points for each: whether the exact bank appears on DICGC’s insured-bank list; how much principal and accrued interest you already hold there; whether those balances are in the same depositor capacity; and whether any current official directions affect access. A second FD at the same bank and in the same capacity adds to that bank’s existing total. A deposit at a different insured bank has a separate cap. This comparison clarifies coverage, but it does not establish which bank offers a better rate or is financially stronger.
What happens if an insured bank faces restrictions?
Deposit insurance should not be confused with immediate access to money. DICGC describes a 90-day claim-settlement obligation for an insured bank placed under All-Inclusive Directions (AID). That timeline is conditional: the bank must provide the depositor information within the statutory 45-day timeline. It is therefore a claims process with stated conditions, not a promise that a depositor can withdraw an FD on demand or receive funds immediately when a restriction begins.
If a bank is subject to directions, use the current official notices and communications for that institution to understand the restrictions and next steps. Do not infer from the existence of DICGC cover that normal FD maturity, premature withdrawal or account access will continue unchanged during a restriction event.

The distinction matters when planning for money you may need at a particular time. Coverage describes the maximum eligible amount under the insurance scheme; it does not guarantee normal account operation during a restriction or tell you whether a particular withdrawal request will be processed. Check the directions and bank-specific instructions that apply at the time, rather than relying only on the fact that a bank is insured.

Deposits the scheme excludes
DICGC lists exclusions as well as covered deposit categories. The stated exclusions include:
- Deposits of Union or State Governments;
- deposits of foreign governments;
- inter-bank deposits;
- deposits received outside India; and
- amounts specifically exempted with prior approval of the Reserve Bank of India.
These exclusions reinforce why it is important to identify the actual deposit and account holder rather than assume that all money connected with a bank is protected. For ordinary eligible customer FDs, the central practical test remains whether the bank is insured and how much eligible principal plus interest the depositor has there in the relevant capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are small finance bank FDs covered by DICGC?
Eligible fixed deposits are covered when the specific small finance bank is on DICGC’s insured-bank list. Verify the named institution on the current official list; the bank category alone is not a substitute for checking its listing.
Is the ₹5 lakh limit per FD or per bank?
It is per depositor per insured bank for deposits held in the same right and capacity. Eligible deposits across branches and deposit types are combined, so opening multiple FDs at one bank does not create a separate ₹5 lakh limit for each.
Does the ₹5 lakh cover include interest?
Yes. The ceiling counts principal plus accrued interest. If those combined amounts exceed ₹5 lakh, the excess is not insured under the stated limit.

The cap applies separately at each insured bank. Deposits at different banks are assessed separately, while deposits at different branches of one bank are combined when held in the same capacity.
Will DICGC insurance mean I can withdraw my FD immediately if restrictions are imposed?
No. Insurance cover and immediate access are different matters. DICGC describes a 90-day claim-settlement obligation for an insured bank under All-Inclusive Directions, subject to the bank providing depositor information within the statutory 45-day timeline. Check the current official directions for account-access instructions.
Who pays for DICGC deposit insurance?
The insured bank pays the insurance premium. Depositors do not purchase a separate policy for each FD.
The Bottom Line
Small finance bank FDs are covered up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per insured bank, including accrued interest, when held in the same right and capacity. Verify the exact bank on DICGC’s current list, total all eligible deposits across its branches, and check any current access restrictions separately. The cap is a safety net for eligible deposits—not a guarantee that every rupee is insured or immediately available.
