Re:

Are Sardines Farmed or Wild-Caught? What to Know About Sustainability

Sardines are generally wild-caught, but that does not automatically make them sustainable. Species, fishing area and current stock assessments matter.

Sardines sold as seafood are generally wild-caught, not farm-raised. Official reporting for the Mediterranean and Black Sea lists sardines among capture-fishery landings, while identifying other species as the region’s main farmed fish. That regional evidence supports the practical answer, but it is not a global survey and cannot rule out experimental or niche sardine farming.

Are sardines farmed or wild-caught?

The sardines consumers commonly encounter are generally wild-caught. In its 2025 report on Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), part of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), distinguishes marine capture fisheries from aquaculture and reports sardines among regional landings. The report names gilthead seabream and European seabass—not sardines—as the region’s main reared species. Read the GFCM’s 2025 State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries.

This evidence is regional, not a worldwide census. It supports saying sardines are generally wild-caught, but not that sardines are never farmed anywhere. “Wild-caught” describes how a fish was produced; it does not certify that the stock is healthy or that the fishing method has low environmental impacts.

Are wild-caught sardines sustainable?

There is no single answer for all sardines. Sustainability depends on the species, the fishing area and the stock assessment used. In its 2023 assessment, the GFCM reported European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) stocks as sustainably exploited in Mediterranean and Black Sea geographical subareas (GSAs) 6, 7, 9 and 20, and overexploited in GSAs 1, 3, 12, 13 and 26. These classifications concern the listed regional stocks, not every sardine fishery worldwide. See the GFCM’s 2023 assessment summary.

The regional context also matters. The GFCM’s 2025 report says 52 percent of assessed Mediterranean and Black Sea stocks were overexploited in 2023. That is a figure for assessed stocks across the region, not for sardines alone. The report’s information is mostly through 2023, based on official country submissions and, where needed, estimates; it should not be treated as a live status update for a particular fishery. The report explains its regional coverage and findings.

How to check the origin of canned sardines

Canned sardines are a common pantry product, but the product form alone says nothing about how responsibly a particular tin was sourced. Use the package or seller’s product information to look for details that allow you to identify the fishery:

  1. Find the species. Check whether the product identifies European sardine or another sardine species. A common name alone may not tell you which stock assessment applies.
  2. Look for the catch area or fishery. An identifiable area makes it possible to compare the product with a relevant, current assessment. Do not apply Mediterranean findings to sardines caught elsewhere.
  3. Check the assessment and its date. Stock status can change. Prefer recent evidence tied to the stated species and fishing area rather than a broad, undated sustainability claim.
  4. Separate traceability from marketing language. “Wild caught,” “sustainable,” or a brand name by itself does not establish the source or status of a particular fishery.

The sources cited here do not establish one universal label or certification that resolves the sustainability of every sardine product. If the species and catch origin are not stated, you may not have enough information to match the tin to a stock assessment.

What regional aquaculture figures do—and do not—show

In the GFCM’s 2025 overview, gilthead seabream and European seabass were the main reared species in Mediterranean and Black Sea aquaculture, accounting for 34 percent and 30 percent of regional aquaculture production, respectively. Those percentages describe the shares of regional aquaculture production for those species; they are not sardine-farming figures. Along with sardines’ appearance in regional capture landings, they help explain why the sardines consumers commonly encounter are generally wild-caught in that region—but they do not establish that sardine aquaculture is absent worldwide. Consult the GFCM regional fisheries and aquaculture report.
