Production energy and factory practices affect environmental impact, and the available public information does not establish the energy mix or lifecycle footprint of Rare Carat’s own diamonds. Treat sustainability as a claim to verify for the specific stone and its producer—not a guarantee attached to the label.
What “lab-grown diamond” means
A laboratory-grown diamond is a manufactured diamond, not a mined diamond. It is also different from a simulant such as cubic zirconia. The Federal Trade Commission says laboratory-created stones have essentially the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds when accurately described. Its consumer guidance explains the distinction and recommends checking that a seller clearly discloses the stone’s origin: FTC advice on buying gemstones, diamonds, and pearls.
FTC Jewelry Guides say terms such as “laboratory-grown” should make clear that a stone is not mined. Rare Carat says its lab-grown diamonds have a laser inscription on the girdle identifying them as lab-grown. Does lab-grown mean more sustainable?
Not automatically. A lab-grown diamond avoids mining that particular stone, but growing diamonds takes energy, and the source of that electricity and the production process influence the footprint. Other relevant factors include water use, materials, waste, emissions, and labor conditions. Without information about the producer and facility, the origin label alone cannot answer how sustainable a specific diamond is.

An Associated Press report in 2024 noted that diamond production can require substantial energy and that many producers did not publish environmental impact reports or independent certification. It also described renewable-powered production, while noting that transparent operations represented a small part of production. The report cited US lab-grown diamond sales rising 16% in 2023 compared with 2022; that is a market-sales figure, not evidence of environmental performance. Associated Press report.
A 2024 peer-reviewed study modeled different production pathways and found lower impacts under scenarios that assumed clean energy. Those conditional results should not be treated as the footprint of every lab-grown diamond. What is known about Rare Carat—and what is not
Rare Carat’s published pages provide buyer-service terms and product-identification information, not a sustainability certification. The company’s FAQ describes a girdle inscription for its lab-grown diamonds; its policy page sets out returns, warranty coverage, resizing, and upgrade conditions. None of those details establishes the electricity source, facility, lifecycle emissions, or social impacts associated with a particular stone.
The company’s policies page says fine jewelry has a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, subject to exclusions including ordinary wear, loss, theft, and certain damage. It describes returns within 30 days for unworn items returned with original certificates, and one no-charge ring resizing within the first year. Its lab-grown upgrade terms say qualifying diamonds purchased after August 7, 2023 may be exchanged for a new lab-grown diamond at 100% credit if the new diamond costs at least twice the original price and the original stone and report meet the stated conditions. These are time-sensitive terms; check the live policy for the exact purchase before relying on them.

How to compare mined and lab-grown diamonds
Neither origin label settles every buying question. Compare the exact stone, its documentation, the seller’s terms, and the evidence behind any environmental or ethical claim.

Questions to ask before buying from Rare Carat
- Who grew this specific diamond, and at which facility?
- What electricity powered production, and over what period?
- Is there a product- or facility-specific lifecycle assessment? What boundaries and assumptions does it use?
- Was the assessment independently reviewed, and does it cover water, materials, waste, and emissions?
- What labor and social-impact information can the producer document?
- What grading report accompanies the exact stone, and what return and warranty conditions will apply to this purchase?
FTC staff guidance cautions that broad environmental claims need substantiation and qualification. If a seller describes a stone as “eco-friendly” or “sustainable,” ask what specific benefit the claim means and what evidence supports it. The FTC explains the issue in its guidance on advertising diamond claims.
