Another orange-juice price surge is possible, but the available evidence does not show that one is imminent. USDA forecasts point to exceptionally low U.S. production and heavy reliance on imports in the 2025/26 season. Higher frozen-concentrate stocks complicate the scarcity picture, while the current tariff record does not establish that all orange juice is covered or that tariffs have raised supermarket prices.
What do the latest supply forecasts say?
The USDA Economic Research Service’s March 26, 2026 outlook forecasts unusually low U.S. production for the 2025/26 season. These are projections, not final season results.
| Measure | USDA outlook | What it tells shoppers |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. orange-juice production | 99 million single-strength-equivalent (SSE) gallons forecast for 2025/26; if realized, likely the lowest in U.S. history. | A very small domestic crop can tighten supply, but it does not by itself predict a particular retail price. |
| Imports | More than 580 million SSE gallons expected in 2025/26. Mexico and Brazil together supplied 94% of U.S. orange-juice imports in 2024/25. | Imported juice is central to U.S. availability, so harvests and trade conditions abroad matter. |
| Beginning frozen-concentrate stocks | 126 million SSE gallons at the start of 2025/26, 60% above the 2024/25 beginning level. | Those larger stocks may help cushion a low domestic crop; the figure is for frozen concentrated orange juice, not all juice on store shelves. |
The outlook also projected higher Brazilian production in 2025/26, which could contribute to higher U.S. import volumes. That is a forecast, not confirmation of how much juice ultimately arrived.
Why the crop can affect supply with a lag
USDA expected 39% of U.S.-grown oranges to go to processing in 2025/26, with most processing oranges grown in Florida. Florida’s non-Valencia harvest generally peaks in December and early January, while Valencia oranges peak in March or early April. Weather and harvest disruptions can therefore take time to show up in the amount of fruit available to processors.

The March outlook reported that winter storms Ezra and Gianna arrived while less than half of Florida’s processing-orange crop had been harvested. It also put the December 2025–January 2026 average on-tree-equivalent grower price at $9.07 per processing-orange box, down 21% year over year. That is a price paid to growers, not a supermarket price; it cannot be used to calculate what a carton should cost.
Are Trump’s tariffs making orange juice more expensive?
The official record establishes a 25% Section 301 tariff on covered Brazilian imports beginning July 22, 2026—not a blanket tariff on every orange-juice product. The July 20 Federal Register notice says USTR retained proposed exemptions that included oranges and orange inputs, with specified exceptions and additions. Customs and Border Protection’s July 21 implementation bulletin gives classification-specific guidance, including a concentrated-citrus-juice category that excludes orange, grapefruit and lime.

Whether a particular shipment of orange juice is covered depends on its tariff classification and the applicable exemption. It would be inaccurate to conclude from the 25% rate alone that all Brazilian orange juice is taxed, or that all orange juice is exempt. The official materials cited here also do not quantify any tariff pass-through to U.S. shelf prices. A tariff can affect an importer’s costs, but that fact alone does not establish the size or timing of a change in what shoppers pay.
Why has orange juice been expensive—and what do older price figures mean?
USDA’s October 24, 2023 historical analysis linked generally higher orange-juice prices to reduced supply associated with disease and extreme weather. After adjusting for inflation, USDA reported that prices rose 5% for frozen concentrated orange juice and 12% for not-from-concentrate juice between 2000/01 and 2021/22. Those long-run comparisons explain part of the background, but they are not current 2026 price readings or a forecast of another jump.

USDA also reported that orange-juice availability declined from about 5 gallons per person in 2000/01 to a forecast 2 gallons per person in 2022/23. Per-person availability is not the same as the price of a carton, and the latter figure was a forecast for that season.
Is there a current retail-price signal of another surge?
Not in the figures available here. USDA’s fruit and tree-nuts data portal was updated September 15, 2026, with October 20 listed as its next update, but the portal information does not provide a latest numeric orange-juice retail price. Without a current price observation and a dated forecast or documented shelf-price pass-through, a claim that prices are about to surge goes beyond the evidence.

The next scheduled USDA NASS Florida citrus forecast was October 9, 2026. It may update the crop outlook, but a crop forecast is still not a retail-price forecast. For a household budget, compare actual prices at your own stores over time rather than treating a production estimate or grower price as a prediction for the next grocery bill.

HHS announced on July 17, 2026, that FDA had issued a final rule lowering the minimum Brix level for pasteurized orange juice from 10.5 degrees to 10 degrees and allowing up to 15% mandarin, tangerine or hybrid juice by volume. HHS said the change could reduce reliance on foreign imports and support domestic producers. It also estimated annual industry savings of more than $50 million; that is an administration estimate, not a measured saving or a forecast of lower retail prices.

The precise legal language, effective date and implementation details should be taken from the final FDA rule. Even if the change enables some producers to use a broader mix of juice, the announcement alone does not establish how quickly products or prices will change in stores.
Quick Recap
How can shoppers compare orange-juice costs?
- Compare unit prices, not just carton prices. Check the shelf label’s price per ounce or quart, and account for package size.
- Compare like with like. Frozen concentrate, not-from-concentrate juice and other refrigerated juice products are not interchangeable price comparisons. For concentrate, include the water needed to prepare it and compare the resulting volume.
- Track the prices you actually face. A short record of the same product or comparable products at your usual stores can show whether your local price is rising; national crop and trade figures cannot substitute for that check.
