Those reports do not establish whether the services are operating now. As of October 8, 2026, there is no confirmed airport-by-airport live status in the available official information; check your departure airport’s current notice and allow extra time.
Are NEXUS and Global Entry still suspended?
The reported disruption was dated February 22, 2026. Global News reported that several Canadian airports posted advisories about unavailable NEXUS and Global Entry access for U.S.-bound preclearance. Vancouver International Airport said its access was suspended until further notice because of the partial U.S. government shutdown; Calgary advised travelers to allow extra time, and Toronto Pearson suggested considering U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Mobile Passport Control app. Global News’ February 22 report records those statements at that time, not the current status.
As of October 8, 2026, general program pages do not confirm whether expedited lanes or kiosks are operating at a given airport or departure time. Check your airport’s current U.S. customs or preclearance advisory before leaving, and contact the airport or relevant authorities if the notice is unclear. Treat any old suspension notice as historical unless the airport confirms it remains in effect.
What is the difference between preclearance and NEXUS or Global Entry?
Preclearance is the U.S. inspection process conducted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at a designated foreign airport before travelers board a U.S.-bound flight. Travelers who complete it generally do not repeat CBP processing on arrival in the United States. CBP’s preclearance overview explains the process.

NEXUS and Global Entry are trusted-traveler programs that provide expedited processing in specified circumstances. They are not the preclearance facility itself. A reported closure of an expedited lane or kiosk does not, by itself, establish that the entire preclearance operation has closed or that flights have been canceled. Confirm the airport’s current procedures rather than assuming ordinary processing or expedited access will be available.
| What it is | Where processing happens | What a service disruption means |
|---|---|---|
| Preclearance | At a designated airport outside the United States, before boarding | Inspection location and operation; a change to a trusted-traveler lane alone does not prove the whole facility is closed. |
| NEXUS or Global Entry expedited processing | At eligible locations and through applicable program procedures | Access to expedited processing may be affected; check the departure airport’s current instructions. |
| Ordinary processing | At the location specified by current airport and CBP procedures | Do not assume its precise availability or location at a particular airport without confirmation. |

That is a general location list, not a live operating-status notice. CBSA’s NEXUS air-travel information describes the program benefit and airport locations.
CBP says a NEXUS card is recognized by Global Entry processing technology at Canadian preclearance locations only. At other ports, that technology requires a passport or U.S. lawful permanent resident card. See CBP’s Global Entry FAQ for its explanation. CBP separately reported that preclearance operations at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport began on March 10, 2026. That new facility does not, on its own, show that the separate CBSA list of eight airports for NEXUS members’ Global Entry kiosk use has changed. CBP’s March 31, 2026 Federal Register notice gives the Billy Bishop facility information.

What should you do before a U.S.-bound flight from Canada?
- Check the airport’s current notice. Look for an advisory about U.S. customs, preclearance, NEXUS, Global Entry, kiosks, or expedited processing. A general program page cannot confirm a lane’s status for your departure.
- Plan for extra time if expedited service is reduced. Calgary’s February 2026 advisory specifically urged passengers to allow extra time. Use your airline’s arrival guidance as well, since no reliable current wait-time estimate is established here.
- Bring documents that meet your travel requirements. Canada’s current U.S. travel advice says Canadian citizens traveling by air to the United States must present a valid passport or a valid NEXUS card used at designated airports. Travelers with other citizenship or immigration status should confirm the applicable document rules with the relevant official source. See Government of Canada travel advice for the United States.
- Check before relying on an alternative. Pearson suggested CBP’s Mobile Passport Control app during the reported February disruption. Verify current CBP and airport instructions before relying on the app; its availability and processing effect are not guaranteed for a particular airport or trip.
- If completing a NEXUS interview, confirm the site and hours. CBSA advises applicants to check preclearance interview-site hours and arrive early. A past airport advisory is not a substitute for current appointment or site instructions.
How large is the preclearance system?
CBP’s March 31, 2026 Federal Register notice said U.S. preclearance facilities processed more than 22 million aircraft travelers in fiscal year 2025. That figure covers travelers processed at preclearance facilities; it is not a count of NEXUS or Global Entry members and does not measure shutdown-related waits. The same notice projected 300,000–350,000 travelers at Billy Bishop’s preclearance facility for fiscal year 2026; that was a forecast, not a realized count.
