Sometimes—but a sale label or crossed-out price alone does not show that you are getting a good deal. Check the item’s price history, compare the exact same product at other sellers, and include shipping and promotion terms before deciding whether to buy.
What a holiday sale price can—and cannot—tell you
A lower price is meaningful only when the comparison is fair. The Federal Trade Commission’s U.S. guidance says a former-price claim has a legitimate basis when the former price was the actual price at which the item was regularly offered for a reasonably substantial period. A price briefly raised to make a later discount look larger can create a false bargain claim. See the FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing.
That standard does not make a price-history chart a legal verdict. A chart records prices captured by a particular service; its coverage and history may be incomplete. It can help show whether today’s price looks unusually low, typical, or higher than previous lows, but it cannot establish on its own whether an advertised former price was lawful.
How to check a holiday deal
- Identify the exact item. Note the model number and relevant options such as size, color, storage capacity, or configuration. Confirm the seller when it affects the offer.
- Review the item’s price history. Use a history chart to compare today’s price with its recent trend and longer-term recorded prices, rather than relying only on the retailer’s crossed-out price.
- Compare current offers for the same item. Check other sellers and add delivery charges. Read promotion conditions, including eligibility requirements, so you compare the price you can actually pay.
- Decide whether the price works for you. A chart does not predict future prices or guarantee that an item will remain in stock. Set a price that makes sense for your budget and needs; do not treat a sale countdown as proof that you must act immediately.
- Check the amount charged. Verify the price shown at checkout or scanned at the register, and keep your receipt. The FTC’s holiday consumer advice recommends checking scanned prices and keeping receipts; it also says, “Comparison shopping is your best bet.” Read its consumer guidance.
Price-history tools: what they cover
Tools differ in retailer coverage, chart depth, alerts, and whether they work through a browser or a product link. The official descriptions below establish some features, but not a complete head-to-head ranking. Check the current interface, availability, and account requirements before relying on a feature.
#1 Best Overall
- - Track Amazon and Flipkart prices
- - Check product price history
- - Monitor price trends

| Tool | What its documentation describes | Practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Keepa | Its Chrome Web Store listing describes Amazon product-page price-history charts and price-drop and availability alerts. | Amazon-focused; the listing does not guarantee complete price coverage or that features will remain unchanged. |
| CamelCamelCamel | Its service page describes Amazon price-history charts, price watches, email alerts, and The Camelizer browser extension. Its extension information says the extension contains no advertising, third-party analytics, or affiliate marketing links. | Amazon-focused. The extension statement applies to that extension, not necessarily to other parts of the company’s services. |
| Chrome Shopping Insights | Google’s support page, Shopping Insights, says the feature can show price history and ranges across the web and let users track products. | Check whether the feature is available in your region and in your current browser interface. |
Price tracking can be useful before a holiday promotion starts: recording changes or setting an alert gives you context when a sale appears. An alert is a prompt to recheck the offer, not a recommendation that the price is good.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which pricing rules apply?
Rules depend on where the offer is made. The FTC guidance addresses U.S. former-price comparisons, but does not set a universal numeric lookback period for those claims. The European Commission describes a distinct EU rule: when announcing a price reduction, shops, including online marketplaces, must indicate the lowest price applied during the preceding 30 days. See the Commission’s consumer-protection sweeps information. Do not treat that EU rule as a universal U.S. requirement; check local rules for your jurisdiction.
