Re:

Are High-Yield Savings Accounts Safe, and Is Your Money FDIC Insured?

High-yield savings accounts can be FDIC-insured deposits, but coverage depends on the bank, ownership category, combined balances, and applicable limit.

Generally, a high-yield savings account is protected against the failure of the bank holding the deposit if that bank is FDIC-insured and your funds qualify for coverage. The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category—not per account. The account’s “high-yield” label alone does not establish insurance, and balances above the applicable limit are not insured.

What FDIC insurance means for a high-yield savings account

“High-yield” describes a savings account’s marketed interest rate; it does not tell you whether the money is insured. For deposit insurance, the key question is which bank actually holds the funds and whether that bank is FDIC-insured. Savings accounts are among the deposit types the FDIC covers at an insured bank. The FDIC’s Understanding Deposit Insurance guide explains the coverage framework.

FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits if an insured bank fails, subject to the coverage limit and ownership rules. It does not make every financial product that happens to be offered by a bank or through an app an insured deposit. Nor does it guarantee that every possible problem with an account—such as fraud, a service interruption, or a loss on an investment—will be covered. The protection discussed here is specifically federal deposit insurance for qualifying deposits at an insured bank.

As of the FDIC guidance accessed October 9, 2026, the standard limit remains $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. That three-part formula is essential. A savings account does not get its own separate $250,000 allowance simply because it has a different account number or product name.

How the $250,000 limit is calculated

The FDIC combines deposits held by the same depositor, in the same ownership category, at the same insured bank. The total can include savings and checking accounts as well as other deposit accounts in that category. The agency’s Deposit Insurance at a Glance summarizes the standard limit and how to think about it.

  • Per depositor: Identify who legally owns the funds. An intermediary or app does not automatically become the owner for insurance purposes.
  • Per insured bank: Add up deposits at that bank, not merely at one branch. A second branch of the same bank is not a separate insured bank.
  • Per ownership category: Accounts in the same category are combined. Separate categories can qualify for separate coverage when their requirements are met.

For example, suppose one person has $170,000 in an individual high-yield savings account and $95,000 in an individual checking account at the same insured bank. If both deposits are in the same ownership category, the combined $265,000 exceeds the standard $250,000 limit by $15,000. Opening two individual savings accounts instead of one would not change that calculation.

By contrast, funds held at separately chartered insured banks are evaluated separately under the standard rule. The bank’s legal identity matters; using another branch or another product from the same bank does not create a new bank for coverage. A depositor may also qualify for more than $250,000 in total at one bank when funds genuinely meet the requirements of different ownership categories. Merely moving the same money among accounts or changing their labels does not establish a different category.

Remember that accrued interest counts

Coverage applies to principal plus interest accrued through the date of a bank failure, up to the applicable limit. That means a balance close to $250,000 can cross the cap as interest accumulates, even if the original deposit was below it. The FDIC’s Your Insured Deposits brochure describes how principal and accrued interest factor into coverage.

When planning around the limit, do not compare the cap only with the amount you initially transferred. Consider the balance that could include accrued interest, and include any other deposits you hold in the same ownership category at that bank. The example is straightforward: if your combined covered-category balance is already $248,000, there is only $2,000 of room before the total reaches the standard limit; interest on the deposits also counts toward that ceiling. This is a coverage calculation, not a prediction of a particular account’s interest earnings.

How to check whether your account is insured

Do not rely only on a product name, an app’s branding, or a broad “FDIC insured” statement. Verify the bank holding the deposit, determine who owns the funds, and account for your other deposits there. For an account offered through a third party, also check whether the arrangement’s records and disclosures support pass-through insurance.

  1. Find the bank named in the account disclosures. Look at the deposit account agreement and insurance disclosures for the institution that receives or holds the funds. If an app or financial company is between you and the bank, identify the underlying bank or banks rather than assuming the app itself is an insured bank.
  2. Confirm the bank is FDIC-insured. Coverage is tied to the insured bank holding the deposit, not simply to the company that markets or services the account. The FDIC’s Are My Deposit Accounts Insured by the FDIC? page identifies products that qualify as deposits and distinguishes them from products that are not covered.
  3. Identify the legal owner and ownership category. Read the account title and agreement. If funds are held through an intermediary, find out whether the arrangement treats you as the actual owner for coverage purposes and what records support that treatment.
  4. Add your deposits at that bank. Include checking, savings, and other deposits in the same ownership category, whether they are in one account or several. Use the bank’s legal identity, not the branch or account brand, to decide which balances belong in the same calculation.
  5. Include accrued interest in a near-limit balance. Coverage is limited on principal and interest together, so leave room below the cap if interest could bring your total above it.
  6. Ask the bank or intermediary for clarification if the documents leave a gap. Request the identity of each bank holding funds, the ownership category used, and an explanation of how customer-level records support pass-through coverage. Do not treat an unclear disclosure as proof of additional insurance.

This checklist can help you understand the structure, but it cannot establish a customer-specific coverage result without the account documents, ownership details, and complete deposit balances. If an arrangement uses multiple banks, determine which portion of your funds is held at each bank and apply the limit separately to the deposits at each one.

What changes when a fintech or other intermediary holds the money

A technology company, brokerage, or other intermediary may arrange for customer funds to be deposited at a partner bank. In that case, the company’s name is not enough to determine coverage: the relevant institution is the underlying bank where the deposit is held. Pass-through coverage may apply when the actual ownership of the funds and the required disclosures and records satisfy FDIC rules.

Pass-through coverage is not an extra ownership category and does not create a second $250,000 limit. If the requirements are met, the funds are treated as deposits belonging to the actual owner at the underlying bank. They are then combined with that owner’s other deposits in the same ownership category at that bank. The FDIC’s Pass-through Deposit Insurance Coverage guide explains the conditions and recordkeeping considerations.

The distinction matters if a customer already has deposits at the partner bank. For example, if an intermediary places $100,000 of a customer’s money at a bank where that customer already has $175,000 in the same ownership category, the total for that category would be $275,000 if pass-through treatment applies and the deposits are aggregated as described. The intermediary’s involvement would not automatically give the customer a separate limit. This hypothetical illustrates the aggregation rule; it does not establish how any particular product allocates funds or whether a particular arrangement satisfies the requirements.

The FDIC guide also describes possible treatment as deposits in the intermediary’s name when pass-through requirements are not met. That is why it is important to read the current disclosures and understand the recordkeeping structure rather than assuming coverage from a marketing phrase. A particular account’s eligibility, allocation, and balance cannot be confirmed from its brand name alone.

Which financial products are not protected by FDIC deposit insurance?

FDIC insurance applies to eligible deposits, not every product a bank, fintech, or brokerage may offer. FDIC materials list stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, and crypto assets among products that are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance. A product’s availability through a bank or financial app does not change its nature into an insured savings deposit.

U.S. Treasury securities are also not FDIC-insured deposits. They have a different form of federal backing, which should not be described as FDIC insurance. The FDIC’s product guidance at Are My Deposit Accounts Insured by the FDIC? is useful when a financial company offers both deposits and non-deposit products. Check what you are actually buying or holding, not just where you access it.

Likewise, any portion of a deposit above the applicable coverage limit is not insured under that limit. The existence of a high-yield rate, an insured bank, or an intermediary does not guarantee the excess balance. FDIC protection also should not be read as protection against every event unrelated to an insured bank failure.

How to decide whether your savings are within the insured limit

Use the coverage rules as a bank-by-bank inventory rather than treating each account as a separate insured unit. For each bank, list the accounts, the legal owner, and the ownership category; then total balances within each category. If you cannot determine the bank or ownership treatment for an account, resolve that uncertainty through its disclosures or the financial institution before relying on the balance as insured.

  • Multiple accounts at one bank: Combine same-category deposits across savings, checking, and other deposit accounts. More account numbers do not multiply the standard limit.
  • Multiple branches: Treat branches of the same bank as one bank for the standard calculation.
  • Different insured banks: Evaluate deposits separately at each separately chartered insured bank.
  • Different ownership categories: Separate limits may apply only when category requirements are actually satisfied.
  • Deposits through an intermediary: Identify the underlying bank, establish the actual owner and category, and determine whether pass-through conditions are met.
  • Balances near the cap: Count accrued interest as well as principal and include other deposits in the same category.

This framework answers the bank-failure question, not every account-selection question. Yield, fees, withdrawal rules, and the quality or availability of account service are separate considerations. FDIC insurance does not tell you whether an account’s rate is competitive or whether its terms suit your needs.

What “safe” does—and does not—mean

A high-yield savings account can provide federal deposit-insurance protection when it is an eligible deposit held at an FDIC-insured bank and the balance falls within the applicable limit. “Safe” should be read with those conditions attached. The marketing label alone does not prove that the bank is insured, that an intermediary arrangement qualifies for pass-through treatment, or that the full balance is within the cap.

The practical answer is to verify the actual bank and account structure, then calculate coverage using the FDIC’s three-part rule: per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. If the funds are investments rather than deposits, or if a deposit balance exceeds the applicable limit, FDIC insurance does not cover that portion as an insured deposit.
