Re:

Are Freelancers Getting Ruined by AI? What the Evidence Shows

AI has reduced some freelancers’ platform work and earnings, while other AI-related categories have grown. The difference depends on the task, measure, and time period.

Some freelancers have already lost work and platform earnings as generative AI has spread, particularly in exposed writing, coding, and image-creation categories. But the evidence does not show that all freelancers are being ruined: measured losses coexist with new AI-related work and growth in some higher-complexity services. The results depend on what is measured, which platform and occupations are included, and when.

Is AI taking freelance jobs?

There is credible evidence that generative AI reduced some freelance opportunities. A peer-reviewed 2024 study by Xiang Hui, Oren Reshef, and Luofeng Zhou, published in Organization Science, examined an online labor platform after early text- and image-generating tools arrived. Freelancers in occupations more exposed to the tools experienced declines in both employment and earnings.

Brookings’ discussion of that study reports about 2% fewer monthly contracts and about 5% lower total monthly platform earnings for more-exposed freelancers. Those are platform outcomes, not estimates of every freelancer’s total income: they do not account for all client relationships or off-platform work. Brookings notes examples including copyediting and proofreading exposed to text models and graphic design exposed to image models. The reported effects cover roughly the first six to eight months after the tools’ launch; they do not mean every writer or designer lost that share of work.

A separate 2024 working-paper summary from the ifo Institute and CESifo found a 21% relative decrease in job posts for automation-prone writing and coding work compared with manual-intensive work within eight months of ChatGPT’s introduction. It also reported a 17% decrease in image-creation job posts after image-generating AI. These are changes in job posts, not a direct count of contracts or freelancers’ earnings. The summary says remaining jobs in automation-prone categories were more complex and offered higher pay.

Why do some studies show losses while others show growth?

The numbers describe different outcomes, periods, and marketplace categories. Fewer job posts do not translate one-for-one into fewer contracts; total monthly earnings are not the same as earnings per contract; and a platform trend is not automatically a causal estimate of what AI did to the whole economy.

Evidence What changed What the figure measures
Hui, Reshef, and Zhou (2024), as summarized by Brookings About 2% fewer monthly contracts and 5% lower total monthly platform earnings among more AI-exposed freelancers Platform contracts and total monthly platform earnings after early AI tools; not all client income
ifo Institute / CESifo working-paper summary (2024) 21% relative decrease in automation-prone writing and coding job posts; 17% decrease in image-creation job posts Job-post changes over the stated windows, not contracts or earnings
Upwork, Future Workforce Index 2026 Generative-AI and creative-production contract starts grew 90% year over year, while earnings per contract fell 13% Upwork category-level contract starts and earnings per contract; not an economy-wide causal estimate
Upwork, Future Workforce Index 2026 Earnings rose 45% year over year for freelancers doing more complex AI work; AI-augmented professional services saw 72% volume growth and 22% earnings growth Upwork’s reported marketplace categories and year-over-year measures

Upwork’s 2026 results show why more work does not necessarily mean better pay per assignment: a category can attract many new contracts while average earnings per contract decline. Conversely, more complex AI work and AI-augmented professional services showed growth in Upwork’s reported measures. These later platform trends do not cancel out the earlier study’s losses; they cover different periods, categories, and measures.

Upwork’s 2025 analysis describes substitution as concentrated in lower-value or routine work alongside augmentation and evolving work categories. It also reported that 66% of clients surveyed expressed high trust in outputs from freelancers using AI, compared with 26% for AI-only output. That was an Upwork Research Institute survey of 673 clients conducted in October 2024—not a measure of public opinion generally.

Which freelance work appears most exposed?

The evidence points to tasks that can be specified and reproduced relatively easily, rather than proving that an entire occupation is safe or doomed. The 2024 studies identify writing, coding, and image-creation work as exposed categories, but their findings are tied to particular platform definitions and early tool releases. Within those categories, the ifo/CESifo summary found that the remaining automation-prone jobs were more complex and higher paid.

  • More exposed in the cited studies: routine or readily replicated work, including some copyediting, proofreading, writing, coding, and image creation.
  • Potentially more resilient or complementary: work requiring domain context, judgment, or more complex delivery. Upwork’s 2026 figures show earnings growth in its more-complex AI-work and AI-augmented professional-services categories, but those figures do not guarantee an individual’s results.

The peer-reviewed study also cautions against assuming that reputation alone protects a freelancer. Its abstract says high past performance did not moderate the adverse employment effect and offers suggestive evidence that top freelancers could be disproportionately affected. That is not proof that every experienced freelancer will fare worse; it means the study did not find a simple safeguard based on prior performance.

What should freelancers track in their own finances?

Because the published figures measure different things, a freelancer should compare like with like when assessing whether AI is affecting their own livelihood. A change in platform job posts is not the same as a change in personal take-home income.

  1. Track work volume: record inquiries, proposals, wins, active contracts, and completed assignments separately. This can distinguish fewer leads from fewer conversions or smaller projects.
  2. Track revenue per assignment and time spent: note the fee and hours for comparable work. A lower contract count may coexist with higher fees per project, while more assignments may still produce less income per contract.
  3. Separate platform earnings from total income: include direct clients and other platforms in your own records. The cited study’s earnings figures concern one online labor platform, not all sources of freelancer income.
  4. Classify the work, not just the job title: distinguish routine execution from work involving client-specific context, judgment, or more complex delivery. This makes it easier to see which parts of your offer are changing.
  5. Review comparable periods: compare similar months or quarters and account for seasonal demand or changes in your own availability. The research’s different observation windows are one reason its estimates cannot be treated as a single forecast.

Does the evidence show that freelancers as a whole are being ruined?

No. It establishes meaningful short-term losses for some AI-exposed freelancers on online platforms, alongside later growth in some AI-related categories. It does not establish one net effect on every freelancer’s livelihood. The peer-reviewed study is strong evidence of harm in its setting; the later Upwork findings are company-reported marketplace measures, and the ifo/CESifo results track job posts rather than earnings. None is a census of offline freelancing, every country, or every profession.

Upwork’s 2026 index also reported that 38% of its surveyed U.S. skilled knowledge workers freelance, up from 28% the prior year. The survey covered 2,400 workers in March–April 2026 and uses Upwork’s defined skilled-worker sample; it should not be read as the share of all U.S. workers who freelance. Growth in that survey does not by itself show that any individual freelancer is financially secure.
