Not automatically. Eclipse glasses sold on Amazon, Temu, or eBay are safe only if you can verify both the manufacturer and the seller—not just a printed ISO 12312-2 claim, familiar branding, or customer reviews. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) recommends buying from a manufacturer on its solar-viewer list or from a seller that the manufacturer publicly identifies as authorized. A marketplace listing alone does not establish that connection.
Why marketplace eclipse glasses deserve extra scrutiny
The issue is traceability, not proof that every pair sold on a particular platform is counterfeit. AAS says it cannot vet every marketplace seller, and warns that some sellers copy the names of legitimate manufacturers onto counterfeit products. AAS’s 2024 guidance referred to more than 100 sellers of solar viewers on its list and hundreds more marketplace sellers it could not vet; those figures do not measure how many listings are unsafe. AAS explains the seller-verification problem.
For a personal-finance decision, treat a low price, a large number of reviews, or familiar packaging as insufficient evidence. The useful question is whether the exact seller can be traced to a manufacturer whose viewers have been found to conform to the safety standard.
How to verify eclipse glasses before buying
- Check the manufacturer on the current AAS list. Use the AAS list of safe solar viewers and filters, which lists manufacturers whose products AAS has found to conform to ISO 12312-2. Check the live page because list membership can change.
- Verify the exact seller with the manufacturer. Buy directly from the manufacturer or follow its own public link to an authorized dealer. Do not rely on a marketplace listing that merely names a listed manufacturer; AAS recommends using sellers the manufacturer publicly identifies.
- Do not treat an ISO label as authentication. ISO 12312-2 conformity is supposed to be tested by an appropriately approved laboratory, but anyone can print a standards claim on glasses or packaging. The label by itself does not prove that the product was tested or that the seller is supplying genuine merchandise. AAS describes how to assess claims in its guide, How Can You Tell If Your Eclipse Glasses or Handheld Solar Viewers Are Safe?
- Reject claims of NASA approval. NASA says it does not approve any particular brand of solar viewer. A claim that NASA approved a specific commercial brand is not a substitute for verifying the manufacturer and seller. See NASA’s eclipse-viewing safety guidance.
AAS no longer tries to maintain a comprehensive list of all retailers because checking the entire seller chain became too burdensome. Its guidance is to use a known manufacturer or an authorized seller the manufacturer identifies—not to assume that a marketplace has vetted a listing.

- 2026 Total Solar Eclipse: The solar eclipse starting on August 12, 2026. This is an essential accessory for you to prepare for observation. It can produce a clear outline and image of the sun without causing any damage to the eyes. It can reduce ultraviolet, infrared and The hazards of strong light, so you can observe the upcoming total solar eclipse with confidence.
- Absolutely 100% quality assurance: Our solar eclipse glasses lenses are extremely excellent and have passed the rigorous testing conducted by the ICS laboratory of U.S. and have an ISO 12313-2 (2015) quality inspection report. Complying with international standards, it can protect your eyes during observation.
- Suitable for everyone: Our glasses are suitable for adults and children, easy to use and very safe. If you are a scientific practitioner, astronomy enthusiast, parent or person in charge of relevant institutions and organizations, these glasses are your best choice.
- Looking directly at the sun can be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. Viewing the sun without a proper filter can cause permanent eye damage. Adequate eye protection designed specifically for viewing the sun is crucial and should be taken seriously.
- Strictly follow the instructions for use: Ensuring that there are no risks during the observation process requires our joint efforts with you. Please cooperate and watch this magnificent astronomical spectacle together, because once missed, the next one will be decades away, which is very rare.
Are the glasses safe to use once they arrive?
Check each viewer before use. Do not use it if its filter is scratched, punctured, torn, otherwise damaged, or coming loose from the frame. Store viewers clean and dry to reduce the risk of scratches and punctures.
A visual inspection cannot establish whether a filter blocks invisible ultraviolet and infrared radiation. A good-looking pair, or one that seems very dark, cannot replace verified sourcing and conformity testing. If you cannot verify the product, do not look at the Sun through it.

Slim enough to fit in your pocket. Easy to carry wherever you're watching from. Everyone gets their own pair. Nobody misses a second.
When eclipse glasses are required
- Partial eclipse: Wear a safe solar viewer whenever you look directly at the Sun. There is no totality during a partial eclipse.
- Annular eclipse: Wear a safe solar viewer for every direct view. The Moon does not fully cover the Sun’s bright face during an annular eclipse.
- Total eclipse: Direct viewing without a filter is safe only during totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face. Put your viewer back on as soon as any bright part of the Sun reappears.
These limits are described in NASA’s safety guidance and the AAS eye-safety guidance.
Can you reuse older eclipse glasses?
AAS says viewers less than 10 years old may be reused only if the manufacturer had them tested by a properly accredited laboratory, the filter is undamaged, and it remains attached to the frame. If you cannot establish the testing history or the viewer fails inspection, do not use it for direct solar viewing. Follow the AAS guidance on safe viewing.

Do not use eclipse glasses with binoculars, a telescope, or a camera
Eclipse glasses are not a safe filter to look through while using a camera, binoculars, or a telescope. Those devices need a separate, special-purpose solar filter securely mounted over the front of the optical equipment. NASA advises seeking expert guidance on the equipment and filter; see its eclipse safety instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you cannot verify your viewer
Use indirect projection instead of taking a chance on an unverified pair. With the Sun behind you, project its image onto a surface and look at the projected image—never look through the pinhole. NASA and AAS describe this as an alternative to direct viewing in their safety guidance and eye-safety guidance. AAS also notes that people watching together can share a small number of verified viewers, taking brief turns to follow the partial phases.
