That was lower than the 3.2% annual rise recorded to July.
What the latest grocery inflation figures show
The ABS’s August 2026 Consumer Price Index release is the latest available as at 8 October 2026. It measures broad price movements across categories, not the price of every product or every household’s shopping basket.

Why the headline does not establish a specific price hike
The title gives no item, retailer, location, shopping basket or comparison period. Without those details, there is no like-for-like calculation to check, and the broad ABS food category cannot show whether a particular product has risen sharply. Product prices can move differently, while package size and quality can also affect comparisons.

So the 3.0% figure is useful context for food inflation, but it is not evidence that a named supermarket has imposed a particular increase—or that every grocery bill has risen by that amount.
What the RBA forecast about future pressure
In its May 2026 outlook, the Reserve Bank of Australia forecast that higher fuel and fertiliser prices would put some upward pressure on grocery inflation in the near term. It expected those costs to pass through faster for fast-moving goods such as fresh produce than for goods whose prices adjust more slowly.

Since 1 July 2026, very large supermarket retailers are prohibited from charging significantly excessive grocery prices compared with their costs to supply plus a reasonable margin, after relevant circumstances are considered. The threshold applies to very large retailers earning more than $30 billion a year in Australia; the ACCC identifies Coles and Woolworths as currently within scope.

The ACCC says there is no fixed price threshold that automatically makes a grocery price excessive. Assessment is contextual and can take account of costs such as purchasing or producing goods, transport and fuel, storage, wages and rent, as well as the retailer’s margin. A price rise, or a price that feels high, does not by itself establish a breach. Passing on higher costs alone is not necessarily unlawful, although conduct that harms competition or misleading claims about prices or the reasons for a change can raise separate legal concerns.
The ACCC announced that it would monitor Coles and Woolworths and select products for closer attention, drawing on consumer and supplier reports and information from supermarkets, including prices, margins and sales revenue. ACCC Acting Chair Catriona Lowe said: “We know that grocery prices continue to be a key concern for households. The excessive pricing prohibition provides us with another tool within our broader toolkit to protect consumers and promote competition in the supermarket sector,” in the ACCC’s 26 June 2026 media release.

How to compare grocery prices and raise a concern
- Compare unit prices. Check the price per kilogram, litre or other standard unit rather than relying only on the shelf price. The ACCC explains unit pricing in its food and groceries guidance.
- Check that the products are comparable. Look at package size and product quality, and use the same product or a genuinely similar one when comparing prices over time.
- Keep the details. If you are concerned about a price or a unit-pricing display, note the retailer, product, price, date and any relevant comparison. The ACCC accepts reports about grocery unit-pricing concerns.
