Re:

Are Apple, Google and Amazon Devices Affected by Canadian Tariffs?

Apple, Google and Amazon devices are not automatically exempt or subject to Canada’s current tariffs. The specific unit’s origin and tariff classification determine whether the surtax applies.

There is no blanket exemption for Apple, Google or Amazon devices. As of October 8, 2026, Canada’s current counter-tariff rules apply to qualifying goods based on their country of origin and tariff classification—not the brand on the box. Smartphones are listed at a 50% surtax rate, but that rate applies only when the order’s origin and classification conditions are met.

Which Apple, Google and Amazon devices are not affected by Canadian tariffs?

No specific Apple, Google or Amazon model can be called categorically unaffected on the evidence available. Canada’s tariff list is organized by products and tariff items, not by brand. A device’s brand, the location of its design team, or the place where a company is headquartered does not by itself establish its customs origin or tariff treatment.

The practical answer is therefore unit-specific: a device is not subject to this U.S. surtax if it does not meet the order’s conditions, including U.S. origin and classification under a listed tariff item, or if an applicable exception applies. The order defines U.S. origin by reference to the CUSMA country-of-origin marking regulations and includes an exception for certain goods in transit when the order came into force.

Are smartphones included in Canada’s tariffs?

Yes. Canada’s current consolidated counter-tariff list includes smartphones under tariff item 8517.13.00 at a listed surtax rate of 50%, effective September 8, 2026. The Government of Canada says the measures taking effect that day cover $27.6 billion in U.S. imports. Those figures describe the government’s measures; they do not establish a retail price increase for any particular phone.

  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

The listing does not mean that every smartphone sold in Canada is subject to the surtax. The order applies to goods that originate in the United States and fall under an item in its schedules, subject to the order’s terms and exceptions. Whether a particular phone meets those tests depends on the specific unit and its import circumstances.

What the available evidence says about each brand

Apple

Apple says its products are designed in California and built by people around the world. Its supply-chain information identifies an iPhone assembly location in mainland China. That establishes that Apple’s production is geographically distributed; it does not establish the origin marking or tariff classification of every iPhone model or unit imported into Canada. Neither “designed in California” nor one assembly-location example proves whether a particular iPhone is covered.

Google and Amazon

The available official evidence does not provide model-specific Canadian origin determinations for Google Pixel phones or Amazon consumer devices. Their U.S. brand identity is not enough to determine whether a specific unit is subject to the surtax. The same origin-and-classification test applies regardless of manufacturer.

How to check a particular device

  1. Identify the exact unit. Check the country-of-origin marking on the device or its packaging and ask the seller or importer for documentation if it is unclear. A brand or model family alone may not identify the origin of the unit being sold.
  2. Check the tariff classification. Determine the applicable tariff item for the imported product, then compare it with the current Canadian consolidated list. For a smartphone, the current list includes item 8517.13.00.
  3. Apply the order’s conditions and exceptions. Confirm whether the goods meet the order’s U.S.-origin and classification tests, and whether an exception—such as the provision for certain goods already in transit when the order came into force—applies.
  4. Confirm the import circumstances. The customs treatment is determined in the context of importation, not simply by where a Canadian shopper later buys the product. For a specific shipment, the importer or a customs professional can confirm the classification, origin and applicable rate.

Canada’s consolidated list identifies covered products, tariff items, effective dates and rates. It should be checked alongside the legal order, since the list and rules can change. A tariff listing alone is not a full estimate of ordinary duties, taxes, shipping charges or a retailer’s pricing.

Why 2025 tariff-removal news does not settle the current question

Canada’s government says it removed the March 2025 counter-tariffs on most U.S. imports effective September 1, 2025, while measures on steel, aluminum and autos remained at that time. That earlier change does not replace the later targeted measures in the current consolidated list, which took effect September 8, 2026. A report about the 2025 removals is not sufficient to establish a device’s status under the current rules.
