Archax is real. Japanese startup Tsubame Industries built this 4.5-meter, 3.5-ton, battery-powered machine as a pilotable transforming vehicle. Tsubame announced a ¥400 million reference price in September 2023—widely converted at the time to about $2.7 million—but that is not a guaranteed current U.S. retail price. Archax uses wheels, not bipedal walking, and its operator sits in a cockpit rather than controlling an autonomous humanoid.
What Archax actually is
Archax combines a steel-and-aluminum vehicle structure, articulated arms and hands, a head, waist and leg mechanisms, a battery system and an enclosed cockpit. Tsubame describes it as a pilotable passenger robot and transforming electric vehicle, not an autonomous humanoid.
Its locomotion is conventional in the most important respect: front-wheel steering and rear-wheel drive. The legs and body change position, but the machine travels on four wheels. Tsubame’s official specifications are available on its Archax product page.
How the pilot controls it
The operator enters the torso through a hatch. Two joysticks control upper-body and articulated functions, while two pedals control driving. A touchscreen handles functions such as mode changes. Four displays show feeds from nine cameras around the machine.

That makes Archax closer to a heavy machine with an immersive control station than to a car with transparent windows or a robot that independently understands its surroundings. Tsubame also lists remote operation as an option.

During transformation, Tsubame says the cockpit tilts forward 17 degrees and the seat automatically leans backward by the same amount to keep the pilot aligned. The company’s mode-change description explains the sequence.

What the $2.7 million figure means
Tsubame’s September 26, 2023 preorder announcement listed a ¥400 million reference price, with one year of maintenance included and an estimated 12–18 month delivery period after ordering. Contemporary dollar conversions produced the often-repeated $2.7 million figure. It should not be treated as a current U.S. list price, a tax-inclusive delivered price or a quotation for every configuration.

The announcement described full-build, made-to-order production. Shipping, export costs, installation, insurance, storage, training and maintenance after the first year may require separate arrangements. Ask Tsubame for the present price and contract terms through its official contact page.
How scarce is it?
The initial announcement specified a five-unit production lot. A July 2024 company announcement again referred to five units and delivery approximately one year after ordering. Those are announced production limits, not proof that five customers have taken delivery. Tsubame’s public material available through August 18, 2026 does not establish completed sales, current inventory or remaining production slots. Tsubame later announced worldwide orders for a special model designed by Shoji Kawamori; availability still requires direct confirmation.

Who is the intended customer?
Tsubame positions Archax against ultra-luxury cars and private jets and identifies wealthy buyers as its principal market. Plausible customers include collectors, museums, entertainment companies, luxury brands and event operators that can justify a highly unusual experiential asset.
The machine can support demonstrations, exhibitions, lectures, collaborations and brand activations. Tsubame has also mentioned construction, disaster relief and space-related uses, but those are future ambitions rather than independently demonstrated commercial deployments.

The ownership costs start after the purchase
Event-leasing information illustrates the infrastructure a full-size Archax needs. For the cited exhibition setup, Tsubame specified:
- Transport on a low-bed trailer and a suitable loading area
- An exhibition footprint of at least 8 m by 8 m
- At least 6 m of ceiling clearance and a door opening of about 4 m by 4 m
- Floor capacity of 1,000 kg/m²
- 100-volt power, normally indoor storage and weather refuge for outdoor events
- Secure indoor overnight storage for multi-day events
Private ownership would also require a charging and high-voltage safety plan, specialized maintenance, trained operators, transport insurance, product and event liability coverage, and local legal review. These event figures are an example, not a complete private-owner specification.
Can you rent one instead?
Yes, at least commercially. In June 2024, Tsubame announced an Archax leasing business covering demonstrations, lectures, collaborations, exhibitions and merchandise opportunities. No public rental price was listed. For a museum, technology expo or luxury-brand launch, a quotation may be financially more sensible than purchasing a machine that requires a trailer, warehouse and specialist support.
What Archax is not
- It is not a freely walking bipedal robot; it is wheel-based.
- It is not presented by Tsubame as autonomous.
- There is no evidence in the cited material of unrestricted public-road approval.
- Its proposed construction, rescue and space roles are not proven operational deployments.
- A statement that Tsubame performed ISO- and JIS-based risk assessments is not universal certification for every country, workplace or road system.
Secondary reporting has described an emergency stop, automatic stopping when the body tilts beyond a specified angle and an escape hatch. Those reports should not be read as a complete or current safety-certification report.

Financial due diligence for a prospective buyer
- Confirm availability: Ask whether the five-unit allocation still applies and whether any slot remains.
- Request a written quotation: Clarify currency, taxes, export, delivery, installation, training and what the first year of maintenance covers.
- Validate the site: Check ceiling, doors, floor loading, trailer access, charging and fire-safety requirements with qualified professionals.
- Check legality and insurance: Determine whether operation is permitted on the intended private property and obtain transport, battery, property and public-liability coverage.
- Budget lifecycle support: Include storage, energy, inspections, software or control-system support, operator training and post-warranty maintenance.
Bottom line
Archax is a functioning, human-piloted transforming mecha-like vehicle—not a movie prop, walking humanoid or autonomous worker. The approximately $2.7 million headline reflects a historical conversion of Tsubame’s ¥400 million reference price, while the five-unit made-to-order plan makes availability uncertain. Its strongest present-day value is as a collectible and high-impact experience for wealthy owners, museums and brands; its industrial and disaster-relief potential remains prospective.
