By the close, the Nifty was up 3.78% and the Sensex 3.95%. The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) also held the repo rate at 5.25%, according to same-day financial-news coverage. This is a retrospective account of that session, not current market news.
Why did Nifty and Sensex rise on April 8?
Goodreturns attributed the opening rally to easing geopolitical tensions after the US–Iran ceasefire announcement. That identifies the catalyst reported at the time; it does not establish that the announcement alone caused the index moves.

The White House said on April 8 that Iran had agreed to a ceasefire and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while broader peace talks were pursued. That is the US administration’s account of the agreement, not confirmation of how it was observed or how long it lasted.

How did the opening move compare with the close?
The headline’s roughly 3.5% figure described the opening move. Later same-day reporting showed that both indices closed with larger percentage gains:
| Index | Opening move reported by Goodreturns | April 8 close reported by Moneycontrol |
|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | Up nearly 3.5% | 23,997.35, up 873.70 points (3.78%) |
| Sensex | Up nearly 3.5% | 77,562.90, up 2,946.32 points (3.95%) |
The open and close figures describe different points in the same trading session. They should not be treated as competing estimates of one price move.

What did the RBI MPC decide?
The rate decision was still pending in the morning coverage, which said a Goodreturns poll expected the repo rate to remain at 5.25%. Moneycontrol’s report later on April 8 said the MPC held the policy repo rate at 5.25%. The decision here is attributed to that same-day financial-news report; the cited material does not include the RBI’s own policy statement.
What this April rally does—and does not—tell investors
The session records how markets responded to news on April 8, 2026; it does not establish what caused every stock’s move or predict future performance. The available event figures also do not provide a historical comparison that would support calling the rally rare or ranking it against other sessions.
These reports do not establish current market levels, the present status of the ceasefire or Strait of Hormuz, or the RBI’s current policy rate. Those questions require up-to-date reporting rather than extrapolation from the April session.
