The April 2026 USDA outlook did not raise projected U.S. corn use. It showed an increase in foreign coarse-grain consumption, led by India’s corn feed and residual use. The distinction matters: the report also raised the U.S. farm-price forecast, but that was a price revision—not a demand increase.
Did the April WASDE raise corn demand?
Not in the United States. In its April 9, 2026 report, USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board said the 2025/26 U.S. corn outlook was unchanged from March. Forecast U.S. feed and residual use remained 6.2 billion bushels. The report’s own summary states, “This month’s 2025/26 U.S. corn outlook is unchanged relative to last month.” (USDA WASDE-670, April 9, 2026.)
The increase was in the foreign outlook described in USDA’s related April Feed Outlook. Foreign coarse-grain domestic consumption rose month to month, particularly feed use; India had the largest increase in corn feed and residual consumption. (USDA ERS, Feed Outlook: April 2026, April 13, 2026.)
What changed in the April outlook?
| Measure | April 2026 change | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. corn feed and residual use | 6.2 billion bushels, unchanged from March (USDA WASDE-670, 2026) | No increase in this U.S. use forecast. |
| U.S. season-average farm price | Up $0.05 to $4.15 per bushel (USDA WASDE-670, 2026) | A higher price forecast, not a revision to forecast use. |
| Foreign coarse-grain domestic consumption | Increased month to month (USDA ERS, April 2026) | The consumption increase was outside the U.S., especially in India’s corn feed and residual use. |
| Selected foreign corn export forecasts | Raised for India, Russia, and South Africa; reduced for Pakistan and Uruguay (USDA ERS, April 2026) | Trade forecasts moved in both directions across countries. |
USDA also reported that U.S. corn disappearance in the first half of the marketing year reached 9.6 billion bushels, more than 1.0 billion above the same period a year earlier. That is a measure of use already recorded over the period, not an April increase to the full-year forecast. (USDA WASDE-670, April 9, 2026.)

Why did foreign corn demand rise?
The ERS April outlook linked the larger global coarse-grain production forecast to foreign corn production gains. It raised the 2025/26 global coarse-grains production outlook by 5.13 million metric tons. India’s corn production forecast increased by 3.2 million metric tons, about 7 percent, from the prior month. ERS also raised India’s corn export forecast by 0.35 million metric tons—more than 50 percent—month to month. These are forecast revisions, not final production or trade results. (USDA ERS, Feed Outlook: April 2026.)
Higher projected production and exports can accompany higher domestic consumption in a country’s balance sheet; they are separate supply-and-use measures. The April ERS report specifically identified India’s corn feed and residual consumption as the largest month-to-month consumption increase. It also projected higher corn exports for Russia and South Africa, partly offset by lower projections for Pakistan and Uruguay. (USDA ERS, Feed Outlook: April 2026.)

How to read a corn-demand revision
A headline about “corn demand” can refer to different locations and uses. To understand what changed, check three things in the report:
- Geography: Is the figure for the United States or for foreign countries? A rise in foreign consumption does not mean the U.S. use forecast rose.
- Use category: Separate feed and residual use from exports and food, seed, and industrial use. Fuel ethanol is the largest U.S. industrial use of corn.
- Balance-sheet measure: Distinguish use from price and ending stocks. A higher farm-price forecast is not, by itself, evidence of higher forecast demand.
For context, USDA ERS describes corn as the primary U.S. feed grain. Feed demand is derived from livestock production: it relates to the numbers of cattle, hogs, and poultry being fed, but also responds to corn supply and price and to the availability and prices of supplemental or competing feed ingredients. What WASDE tells readers
The World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) is USDA’s monthly report of annual supply-and-use forecasts for major U.S. and world crops, as well as U.S. livestock. The World Agricultural Outlook Board prepares and releases it using USDA interagency committees that compile and interpret domestic and foreign data. USDA lists April 9 as the 2026 April release date. (USDA WASDE report information.)
