Applying for Multiple Loans in a Week: What It Means for Your Credit

Multiple applications for the same type of loan may be grouped for scoring when made within a short shopping window. Different loan types can be treated separately.

Applying to several lenders in one week can create multiple hard inquiries, but applications for the same type of loan made within a short rate-shopping period are generally grouped as one inquiry by scoring models. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes that period as generally 14 to 45 days; the exact treatment depends on the loan type and scoring model. Applications for different kinds of loans, such as a mortgage and an auto loan, may count separately.

How applying for several loans can affect your credit

When a lender checks your credit as part of evaluating a loan application, it usually creates a hard inquiry. Hard inquiries can affect your credit score and can be seen by lenders that obtain your report. The CFPB says, “A single credit inquiry from a lender will have little impact on your credit score.” That is not a guarantee about the effect of several inquiries or every borrower’s score. CFPB guidance on credit inquiries was last reviewed December 31, 2024.

For multiple applications of the same loan type, scoring models generally treat inquiries made in a short rate-shopping window as one inquiry for scoring purposes. The CFPB gives a general range of 14 to 45 days. That guidance is not a universal rule for every scoring model or loan product, and a credit report may still show the individual inquiries.

Some common scoring models disregard auto, student-loan, and mortgage-related inquiries made in the 30 days immediately before the score is calculated. This is a model-specific scoring treatment, not a promise that the inquiries will be erased from your report. The dates that matter are when the lender checks your credit and when the score is calculated. The CFPB explains the variation among models.

When inquiries are more likely to count separately

You apply for different types of loans

Rate-shopping treatment generally applies to inquiries for the same type of loan. A mortgage inquiry and an auto-loan inquiry made in the same week may be counted separately because they relate to different loan types.

You spread applications beyond the shopping window

If same-type loan inquiries fall outside the short period recognized by the scoring model, they may count as multiple inquiries and could negatively affect your score. The CFPB’s general 14-to-45-day range is guidance, not a guaranteed window that applies identically to every score.

You ask about rates before applying

Asking a lender about rates alone does not authorize it to pull your credit report. Before you submit an application or provide permission for a check, ask whether the lender plans to make a hard inquiry or can discuss an initial rate without one. CFPB guidance distinguishes credit inquiries.

Hard and soft inquiries are different

A hard inquiry commonly follows an application when a lender evaluates eligibility. It may affect a score and is visible to other lenders reviewing the report. A soft inquiry can occur when you check your own report, when an account is reviewed, or during prescreening and certain employment screenings; soft inquiries do not affect scores and are not visible to lenders purchasing your report. The CFPB describes hard and soft inquiries.

How to compare loans while limiting avoidable credit impact

For an auto loan

  1. Review your credit reports for errors before applying. The CFPB recommends checking reports for inaccuracies as part of preparing to shop. See the CFPB’s auto-loan guidance.

  2. Seek preapprovals from multiple lenders before visiting a dealership, and ask each lender how it will check your credit.

  4. Compare the written offers, including the rate, fees, monthly payment, and total repayment cost—not just the payment amount.

A dealer may send your information to roughly five potential lenders, according to the CFPB. Keeping the car-buying process and related applications concentrated in time can help you avoid spreading inquiries across a longer period. Read the CFPB’s auto-loan shopping advice.

For a mortgage

  1. Compare offers from multiple lenders and review the interest rate, APR, estimated fees, and monthly payment. The CFPB estimates that homebuyers may save $600 to $1,200 per year by getting mortgage offers from multiple lenders; this is a potential savings estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual. CFPB mortgage-shopping guidance.

  2. Request and compare Loan Estimates. A Loan Estimate shows terms a lender expects to offer; it is not a final approval or denial. Lenders must provide one after receiving six key pieces of information: your name, income, Social Security number, the property address, the property’s estimated value, and the loan amount.
