Apple confirmed on August 6, 2025, that it is working with Samsung at Samsung’s Austin, Texas, fab on a novel chipmaking technology. Apple did not identify the product. Financial Times reporting, summarized by MacRumors, says the project involves three-layer stacked image sensors for future iPhones. That camera-specific account remains unconfirmed by Apple, as do the sensors’ iPhone models, production volumes and launch timing.

What Apple confirmed—and what remains reported

Apple described the Samsung collaboration as part of its broader $600 billion U.S. investment commitment. That figure is not an amount earmarked for image sensors. In its August 6, 2025 announcement, Apple said the work at Samsung’s Austin fab involved an innovative chipmaking technology not previously used anywhere in the world. It did not publicly name image sensors, iPhones or a specific manufacturing process.

The image-sensor explanation comes from Financial Times reporting, relayed by MacRumors. That account describes a three-layer stacked CMOS sensor project, with Samsung’s System LSI image-sensor business reportedly contributing sensor technology and Samsung Foundry handling manufacturing. Treat the sensor connection as reported supply-chain news, not an Apple-confirmed product specification.

What an image sensor does

A CMOS image sensor converts light entering a camera into electrical signals that can be processed into an image. It is one part of a camera system, not the whole camera and not the iPhone’s main processor.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • The lens gathers and focuses light.
  • The sensor records light as electrical data.
  • Stabilization hardware can reduce movement during capture.
  • The image signal processor and Apple’s software process the data, including color, HDR and computational-photography effects.

The reported project concerns sensor manufacturing. It is not confirmation that Samsung will manufacture an A-series application processor for Apple in Texas.

What “three-layer stacked” means

In a stacked sensor, functions that would otherwise share a semiconductor layer are arranged across multiple layers. The architecture can give designers more flexibility in how pixels, circuitry and readout functions are laid out. The Financial Times report summarized by MacRumors associates the reported design with potential gains in pixel density, readout speed, power efficiency, low-light performance and dynamic range.

  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

Those are possible architectural advantages, not measured iPhone results. Higher pixel density does not necessarily mean more megapixels, and faster readout alone does not guarantee better video. The final result depends on the sensor’s size, pixel pitch, circuitry and readout design, as well as the lens, stabilization, image processing, software and power constraints. A new sensor does not automatically mean visibly better photos.

Does this mean Samsung is replacing Sony?

It could mean Samsung becomes an additional or alternative supplier for some iPhone sensors; it does not establish that Sony is leaving Apple’s camera supply chain. Apple has not publicly confirmed its future supplier allocation. Different camera modules, models, production batches or regions could use different suppliers.

  • Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

There is a separate, earlier report to keep distinct from the Texas announcement: analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was reported in 2024 as saying Samsung was developing a 1/2.6-inch, 48-megapixel ultra-wide sensor for Apple, potentially as early as 2026. That was an analyst forecast, not an Apple specification or proof that this exact sensor is the one planned for Texas. MacRumors’ account of the report does not establish that Sony will be removed from every iPhone camera.

Why make a sensor in Texas?

A Samsung-made sensor produced in the United States could help Apple diversify its supply chain, access U.S.-based semiconductor capacity and reduce reliance on a single supplier or manufacturing geography. It also fits Apple’s stated U.S. investment effort and may offer strategic or regulatory advantages. These are plausible reasons for the arrangement, not a disclosed list of project goals.

  • 6.1" Super Retina XDR display. 5G Superfast downloads, high?quality streaming
  • Cinematic mode in 1080p at 30 fps. Dolby Vision HDR video recording up to 4K at 60 fps. 2X Optical zoom range
  • A15 Bionic chip. New 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores. New 4-core GPU. New 16-core Neural Engine
  • Up to 19 hours video playback. Face ID. Ceramic Shield front. Aerospace-grade aluminum

Building a new process in Texas may also involve higher costs, complex qualification and ramp-up challenges. A new supplier must meet demanding requirements for consistency, defect rates, color response, autofocus, HDR, video readout and supply capacity. Those are manufacturing considerations, not evidence that the project has encountered problems. There is no established basis to predict whether the arrangement will change iPhone prices.

Samsung’s role is strategically notable because it supplies components to Apple while competing with it in smartphones. That does not mean Samsung would receive Apple’s complete camera designs, or that a Samsung Galaxy sensor would simply be transplanted into an iPhone.

Which iPhones might use the technology?

Current reporting points toward the iPhone 18 generation, with preparations reportedly beginning ahead of the expected 2026 launch cycle. The model assignment, sensor specifications, production volumes and whether every unit would use a Texas-made component are not confirmed. The earlier forecast of a 48-megapixel ultra-wide sensor should not be combined with the later stacked-sensor report as though they describe a confirmed, single part.

Several outcomes remain possible: Samsung sensors could appear in only some models or camera positions; Apple could qualify Samsung and Sony in parallel; or production yield and capacity could limit an initial rollout. The available reporting does not establish which, if any, will happen.

What the development does—and does not—mean

  • It may mean: a new sensor architecture and another manufacturing route for future iPhone components, if the reporting proves accurate.
  • It does not mean: the entire iPhone will be assembled in Texas. A U.S.-made sensor would be one component in a globally distributed supply chain; it says nothing by itself about where the lens, display, memory, processor, battery or finished phone is made.
  • It does not establish: a 200-megapixel iPhone camera. Samsung’s corporate report describes advanced image-sensor development, including 200-megapixel sensors, but does not show that Apple will use one. Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report also documents foundry capabilities, including 2nm and 3nm GAA processes; it does not establish that those nodes are used for this Apple project.
  • It does not guarantee: better image quality, lower prices or a complete break with Sony. Those outcomes depend on product choices and performance that have not been disclosed.
