Apple’s newest tracker, officially called AirTag (2nd generation), launched in the United States on January 26, 2026. Apple’s list prices are $29 for one and $99 for a four-pack; recent retailer price checks found the one-pack around $27 and the four-pack around $89. Those are changing offers, not guaranteed prices. For a working first-generation AirTag, an upgrade is optional: the main reasons are the louder speaker, longer Precision Finding range, and wrist-based finding on select Apple Watches.

AirTag (2nd generation) prices and best pack size
Apple’s U.S. list price is $29 for one or $99 for four. The four-pack works out to $24.75 per tracker at list price, so it is the better per-unit value if you need several. A recent price-tracker capture put the four-pack at $89, or $22.25 per tracker. Recent retailer pages showed one AirTag at about $27 at Walmart and Amazon, and $27.99 at Best Buy.

Retailer prices can change, go out of stock, or reflect a different marketplace seller at checkout. The lowest reported 2026 prices—$24 for one or about $89 for four—are historical deal lows, not a promise of the price today. Choose one or four based on what you will use
- Choose one if you need a replacement, want to try the Find My ecosystem, or only have one item to tag.
- Choose four if you can put all four to work; at list price, it costs less per tracker than buying four individually.
- A five-for-$99 Costco offer has been reported during some promotions, but availability and terms vary. Confirm the current offer directly before comparing it with Apple’s four-pack.
Apple offers free personalized engraving through its own channel, while third-party discounts may be better for buyers who do not need engraving. Apple’s product information and retailer listings are not interchangeable on seller, return, or warranty terms.
What changed in the second-generation AirTag
The outside remains broadly familiar. Apple’s technical specifications list a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip and upgraded Bluetooth hardware, with the main practical changes focused on locating a tag more easily. Apple’s technical specifications
Precision Finding reaches farther, with limits
Apple says Precision Finding range is expanded by up to 50% compared with the prior model. “Up to” is a maximum manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed improvement in every room or for every phone. Walls, furniture, orientation, radio interference, and a tag buried in luggage can all affect the connection. The improvement is not a 50% increase in universal tracking distance and does not turn AirTag into GPS.

The speaker is louder
Apple says the new speaker is 50% louder and that its sound can be heard from up to twice as far under Apple’s stated conditions. That can help when a tag is under cushions, inside a bag, or in a noisy room. It remains a sound played on demand, not a continuous beacon. Apple’s announcement
Precision Finding can work from select Apple Watches
For the first time, Precision Finding is available from Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, with watchOS 26.2.1 or later. This is useful for supported-watch owners who want to locate an item without taking out an iPhone; it is not a feature for every Apple Watch.
Lost-item sharing adds another recovery route
AirTag can share an item’s location temporarily with trusted contacts and participating third parties. Apple materials describe support involving more than 50 airline partners. Sharing can help an airline locate delayed luggage, but it does not replace the airline’s baggage-claim process or guarantee recovery. Walmart’s product listing

Compatibility: check your devices before buying
- Setup and basic Find My use: Apple lists an iPhone with iOS 26.0 or later, or a compatible iPad with iPadOS 26.0 or later, and an Apple Account as requirements.
- Precision Finding: Requires compatible Ultra Wideband hardware in the searching device. Apple lists iPhone 15 or later among compatible models; exact availability varies by region and model.
- Apple Watch Precision Finding: Requires Apple Watch Series 9 or later or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, along with the relevant software.
These are distinct capabilities: a device may support basic Find My use without supporting the newest Precision Finding features. Check Apple’s current technical specifications against your exact device and region before purchase. An older device that cannot update to the required software may make the new tracker a poor fit.
Should you upgrade from the original AirTag?
The second generation is an evolutionary refresh, not a replacement for the Find My concept. Keep a working first-generation tag if it reliably finds your keys or bags and you do not need the new features. Consider replacing or adding one when the improvements solve a problem you actually have.
Upgrade if the new features matter to your routine
- Your current tag is difficult to hear or its speaker is failing.
- You often need to locate an item from farther away and use compatible Precision Finding hardware.
- You own a supported Apple Watch and want wrist-based Precision Finding.
- You are buying additional trackers and can get the newer model at a worthwhile discount.
- Your existing unit is failing or you want to replace a depleted or damaged tracker.
Keep the original if it already does the job
- It reliably finds the items you care about.
- Your usual searches are room-to-room and the original range and sound are sufficient.
- Your phone, tablet, or watch cannot use the new software or hardware features.
- A first-generation unit is substantially cheaper and meets your needs.
No trade-in program or upgrade credit is identified in the available product information; do not count on an exchange discount. Apple’s direct retail channel has discontinued the original model, though third-party stock may remain. Compare any older listing by per-unit price and check whether it is new, refurbished, or used, who sells and fulfills it, what warranty applies, and whether old stock may have a depleted battery. What AirTag still does—and does not—do
AirTag uses Apple’s Find My network, not a cellular or GPS connection. Nearby compatible Apple devices can help relay an item’s location through that network; AirTag itself does not provide continuous live tracking or independent location updates. It is a poor choice for vehicle fleet monitoring or any situation that requires an independent GPS tracker. A GPS product may be more appropriate, but generally involves a different device, cellular coverage, charging, and potentially a recurring subscription.
- Battery: It uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Apple rates battery life at more than one year under stated usage assumptions; sound use, Precision Finding, temperature, and battery quality can affect actual life.
- Durability: Apple lists IP67 water and dust resistance, tested up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. That rating is not a guarantee against damage in every exposure.
- Attachment: There is no built-in key-ring hole. Keys and many bags need a separate holder; a tag placed inside a wallet or an existing pocket may not.
- Size: Apple lists a 1.26-inch (31.9 mm) diameter, 0.31-inch (8.0 mm) thickness, and 0.42-ounce (11.8-gram) weight.
- Ecosystem: It requires an Apple Account and is designed to work with Apple devices and Find My, rather than serving as a general Android tracker.
Apple provides AirTag accessories, but a holder is an additional purchase; its cost depends on the accessory you choose.

A first-generation AirTag can still be a sensible bargain for a secondary item, a buyer with compatible older hardware, or a household already using several original tags. The discount needs to be meaningful after comparing per-unit price, condition, shipping, and warranty with the new model. Be cautious with used or refurbished listings, incomplete packaging, unknown marketplace sellers, and old stock.

Other trackers fit different ecosystems and jobs. Tile is a more natural option for a household needing broader cross-platform support; Samsung Galaxy SmartTag models are aimed at Galaxy users. Neither should be assumed to match AirTag’s Apple-native Find My integration. For independent location updates, compare a GPS tracker’s coverage, charging, size, and subscription requirements. For any alternative, check battery replacement, finding precision, speaker, privacy protections, and phone compatibility rather than comparing only sticker prices.
Buy now, wait, or skip?
If you need a new tracker, a genuine second-generation AirTag at around $27 for one or $89 for four is a reasonable buy based on the recent observed prices. The four-pack is the stronger value if you will use all four; a single tag avoids paying for units you do not need. At Apple’s full list price, the newer model still makes sense for a first-time buyer who wants Apple’s current tracker, while a working first-generation owner can wait unless longer-range finding, a louder speaker, or supported Apple Watch use would materially help.
Skip AirTag if you use Android without Apple devices, need GPS or continuous tracking, or cannot meet the compatibility requirements. It is also meant for objects—not secretly tracking people. Apple’s anti-stalking protections are part of the product’s safety design, but they do not make covert tracking acceptable or safe.
