Apple’s iPhone 16 “preapproval” process was an order-preparation feature, not an early preorder or inventory reservation. Before preorders opened, U.S. customers could choose an iPhone 16 configuration, arrange a trade-in, select Apple or carrier financing, complete available financing approval steps, and save the shopping bag for faster checkout.
The feature was used for the September 2024 launch and is no longer an active iPhone 16 preorder opportunity. Financing approval, saved configurations, and trade-in estimates did not guarantee stock, launch-day delivery, a carrier promotion, or a completed purchase.

When Apple’s iPhone 16 preapproval process ran
Apple announced the preparation option in September 2024. For the U.S. launch, Apple said customers could complete the head-start process until 9 p.m. PDT on September 12, 2024. iPhone 16 preorders opened at 5 a.m. PDT on September 13, and retail and delivery availability began on September 20.
| Event | U.S. date and time |
|---|---|
| Order preparation deadline | September 12, 2024, at 9 p.m. PDT |
| Preorders opened | September 13, 2024, at 5 a.m. PDT |
| Retail and delivery availability | September 20, 2024 |
These dates and the preparation details came from Apple’s September 2024 launch announcement. Apple also said preorders were available in more than 58 countries and regions, but local times, financing, carrier support, taxes, and trade-in rules varied.

What customers could do before preorders opened
The process was available through Apple.com and the redesigned Apple Store app. The exact labels and screens could differ between the website and app, but the practical sequence was generally:
- Select an iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, or iPhone 16 Pro Max.
- Choose the color, storage capacity, and carrier or purchase configuration.
- Provide information about an existing device for trade-in.
- Select a payment method or financing option.
- Complete any available financing preapproval or authorization step.
- Save the configured shopping bag.
- Return after preorders opened to confirm availability, delivery or pickup, financing, trade-in terms, and the final order.
A contemporary walkthrough from 9to5Mac also described the option as a way to prepare an order ahead of the September 13 launch. Apple described customers as being “one click away” after saving the bag, but that was promotional shorthand—not a promise that every buyer could submit an order without further checks.
What “preapproval” meant
There were two related parts to the feature:
- Order preparation: choosing the phone, carrier, trade-in, payment method, and configuration in advance.
- Financing preapproval: beginning an approval process for an eligible Apple or carrier financing option before the preorder window.
Financing approval remained subject to the relevant lender’s or carrier’s credit assessment, account requirements, available credit, and transaction conditions. It did not mean that every applicant qualified, and it did not complete the purchase.

Apple Card Monthly Installments versus carrier financing
For U.S. buyers, Apple’s launch announcement highlighted Apple Card Monthly Installments, carrier financing, and carrier promotions. These options were not interchangeable.
| Option | How it worked | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Card Monthly Installments | Apple Card customers could use 0% APR installments for eligible purchases and receive 3% Daily Cash at launch, subject to approval and available credit. | The purchase could consume a substantial portion of the card’s available credit. An eligible carrier choice was required for U.S. iPhone purchases. |
| Carrier installment plan | The carrier financed the device, sometimes reducing the effective cost through monthly bill credits. | The customer generally had to maintain an eligible plan and account for the required promotional period. |
Apple’s support documentation identifies AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, and Verizon as supported carrier choices for Apple Card Monthly Installments. It also says prepaid carrier plans are not supported for that financing option. That restriction concerns Apple’s financing checkout; it does not by itself determine whether a particular iPhone can operate on a compatible network.

Trade-in estimates and carrier credits were different
In its September 2024 announcement, Apple said U.S. customers could receive $180 to $650 for an iPhone 12 or later, depending on the device and applicable terms. Apple also advertised up to $1,000 toward an iPhone 16 Pro through qualifying carrier promotions.
Those figures were launch-period estimates or advertised maximums, not guaranteed payouts. The result could depend on the phone’s model, storage, condition, inspection, carrier, plan, activation, account status, and promotional requirements.
The timing also mattered:
- Apple trade-in credit could be reflected in the purchase calculation, subject to inspection and the applicable trade-in terms.
- Carrier promotional credit was generally delivered as monthly reductions on future bills rather than as an immediate discount.
A headline such as “get $1,000 off” therefore did not necessarily mean the customer paid $1,000 less at checkout. The promotion might require an eligible trade-in, a new line or upgrade, a qualifying plan, and continued service for a defined period. Taxes may also be calculated on the pre-credit price, depending on the carrier and jurisdiction.

When Apple’s direct process made sense
Apple’s preparation flow was most useful for buyers who already knew their preferred configuration and wanted Apple’s checkout, trade-in, retail pickup, or Apple Card financing in one place. It could reduce the number of decisions required during the high-traffic preorder opening.
Ordering directly from a carrier could be better for an existing customer whose upgrade eligibility, plan, and trade-in qualified for a carrier-specific promotion. The trade-off was that the advertised savings could depend on remaining with that carrier for many months. Paying off the phone early, changing plans, canceling service, or switching carriers could cause future credits to stop or leave a remaining device balance due.
Apple’s direct process also did not automatically provide the best economic result. A customer should compare the immediate purchase amount, financing balance, trade-in value, monthly bill credits, required plan cost, and the consequences of leaving the carrier—not just the headline discount.
What to do if something went wrong
Financing approval failed or was incomplete
Check the selected carrier, available Apple Card credit, billing information, and carrier account eligibility. If approval remains unavailable, use another eligible payment method or the carrier’s own preorder channel. Do not assume that a saved bag preserves the financing decision or holds the phone.

The carrier was prepaid or unsupported
Apple’s stated Apple Card Monthly Installments requirements did not support prepaid carrier plans and listed AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, and Verizon as supported choices. A buyer using another arrangement may need to purchase through the carrier or choose a different payment method.
The app or website did not work
Try Apple.com if the Apple Store app fails, or the app if the website is slow. Account sign-in, two-factor authentication, carrier PIN verification, billing-address mismatches, and payment verification can all add steps. An Apple retail store or the carrier’s own site may provide an alternative, depending on the financing or promotion selected.
The carrier promotion was unclear

Bottom line
Apple’s iPhone 16 preapproval process let buyers do much of the administrative work before September 2024 preorders opened. It was valuable for speeding up checkout, but it was not an early purchase window, inventory reservation, guaranteed financing approval, or guarantee of launch-day delivery. The safest way to evaluate the offer was to separate three questions: whether the phone was in stock, whether the financing was approved, and whether the advertised trade-in or carrier savings actually applied to the customer’s account.
