The $199 iPad deal was real, but it was historical. In August 2024, Amazon and Best Buy reportedly sold a new, U.S. 64GB Wi‑Fi iPad (9th generation) for $199—about $130 below its $329 launch MSRP. Deal publications called that the lowest reported price for this specific new-retail configuration. There is no evidence here that the offer remained available in 2026, so it should not be treated as a live buy-now alert.
What the $199 deal included
The offer applied to the iPad 9th generation, 64GB, Wi‑Fi-only model in new retail condition. AppleInsider reported the price at both Amazon and Best Buy on August 19, 2024. The approximately 40% discount is calculated against the model’s original $329 MSRP, not necessarily a current retailer list price.
The 256GB Wi‑Fi version was listed at about $349.99 in the same coverage, so the $199 price did not apply to every storage or connectivity option. Taxes, shipping, membership requirements, color availability and stock could change the final checkout total.
“Lowest price ever” should be read narrowly: the lowest price reported by the cited deal publications for a new U.S. 64GB Wi‑Fi unit. It does not establish a lower bound for refurbished, open-box, cellular, imported or marketplace listings.

- 64GB or 256GB storage
- 8MP rear camera and 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage
- Home button with Touch ID
- Lightning connector, 3.5mm headphone jack and Smart Connector
- Support for first-generation Apple Pencil

Why $199 was compelling
Useful everyday performance
The A13 is old by current flagship standards, but it is suitable for browsing, streaming, email, reading, casual games and basic schoolwork. Contemporary deal reviews specifically praised the chip, display and battery for ordinary tablet use; those are review assessments, not independent testing here. See Laptop Mag and Tom’s Guide.
Good calls and wired-audio options
The 12MP front camera and Center Stage help with video calls, while the headphone jack remains convenient for children, travel and wired headphones.

Notes and basic drawing
First-generation Apple Pencil support makes the tablet workable for handwritten notes and simple sketches. The Pencil is sold separately and pairs and charges through Lightning, as Apple explains at its pairing guide.
Software remains available
Apple’s iPadOS 26 compatibility list still includes the 9th generation. Compatibility does not mean every feature is available: Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature documentation limits Apple Intelligence capabilities to newer hardware, so this iPad should not be bought for Apple Intelligence.

The compromises that matter
64GB fills quickly
Games, downloaded video, photos and creative apps can consume 64GB quickly. There is no memory-card expansion, so buyers with large libraries should consider a newer, higher-capacity iPad.
Older design and connector
The Home-button chassis has larger bezels than current models, and Lightning is less convenient than USB‑C for modern chargers, hubs and accessories. The first-generation Pencil also lacks the magnetic charging and pairing used by newer systems.
Age, battery and warranty
In 2026, a “new” 9th-generation unit may be old stock. Battery condition, remaining warranty, return rights and whether the listing is actually open-box or refurbished can materially change the value. Current software support also does not guarantee a long future support horizon or feature parity.
Who should buy it at a genuine $199
- Parents seeking an inexpensive family or children’s tablet
- Students needing reading, research, web access and basic note-taking
- Travelers wanting a low-cost streaming or reading screen
- Apple households that value iPadOS and Apple services
- Buyers who specifically want a headphone jack or Home button and can live with 64GB
Who should choose a newer iPad
- Anyone requiring USB‑C, more than 64GB or a newer processor
- Users planning serious video editing, advanced illustration, professional music work or laptop replacement
- Buyers who want Apple Intelligence or the newest accessory ecosystem
- People who need cellular service or a current manufacturer warranty
- Anyone for whom a newer base iPad is only modestly more expensive
Use Apple’s current iPad buying page to compare live models and prices rather than assuming an old-stock 9th-generation listing is the better value.
How to verify a similar listing
- Confirm the title says iPad 9th generation, not 10th generation or an older model.
- Confirm 64GB and Wi‑Fi; do not confuse cellular, 256GB or accessory listings with the deal.
- Check that the condition is new, not renewed, refurbished or open-box.
- Identify whether Amazon or Best Buy is the seller or whether a third-party marketplace seller is involved.
- Review return terms, warranty coverage and the final price after tax, shipping and any membership requirement.
- Check stock, color, model number and regional compatibility before paying.
Verdict
At $199, a genuinely new 64GB Wi‑Fi iPad 9th generation was an exceptional historical value for basic tablet use. The deal was documented in August 2024—not verified as a live 2026 offer. Buy only if the exact configuration, condition, seller, warranty and final price are clear and the limitations are acceptable. If the price is substantially higher, or if USB‑C, larger storage, Apple Intelligence or longer forward-looking support matters, a newer iPad is the safer purchase.
