Apple has integrated ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence features, including Siri, but the evidence does not establish that Microsoft was upset by the arrangement. The distinction matters: ChatGPT is an optional extension Siri can call on, not proof that Siri itself runs on ChatGPT. Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes a separate next-generation Siri AI effort powered by Apple Foundation Models developed with Google.
What Apple’s ChatGPT integration does
Apple integrates ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence experiences across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Siri can offer to use ChatGPT when it may help with a request, including questions involving photos or documents. The integration also makes ChatGPT capabilities such as image and document understanding available within Apple’s experiences, rather than requiring a user to switch apps. OpenAI describes the arrangement in its Apple Intelligence – Siri FAQ.
Permission and privacy controls
Siri normally asks before sending a request to ChatGPT. Users can change the confirmation setting, but sending a file always requires permission. Those prompts are part of how the extension works; they do not mean every Siri request is sent to ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is not the same thing as Siri’s underlying AI
It is more accurate to describe ChatGPT as an extension Apple Intelligence can invoke than to say Apple replaced Siri with ChatGPT. Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement says Siri AI is powered by the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, developed in collaboration with Google and Gemini. That announcement does not describe ChatGPT as the underlying model for Siri AI. The two roles should not be conflated: ChatGPT remains an available extension, while Apple describes its newer Siri AI as based on Apple Foundation Models developed with Google.

Was Microsoft upset about Apple’s deal?
The public material cited here does not verify Microsoft’s emotional reaction to Apple’s ChatGPT integration. Microsoft and OpenAI said in a February 27, 2026 joint statement that their partnership “remains strong and central.” That is the companies’ public characterization of their relationship, not independent evidence of Microsoft’s private view of Apple’s arrangement. The original report’s claim of displeasure would need its own attributed evidence before it could be treated as fact.
What Microsoft and OpenAI’s published agreement says
Microsoft’s April 27, 2026 account of amended partnership terms describes a continuing commercial relationship alongside greater flexibility for both companies. The terms it announced include:

Which iPhones can use the feature?
Apple Support’s iOS 27 guide says Apple Intelligence requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later. Availability also depends on language and region; usage limits may apply, and the ChatGPT extension is available only where ChatGPT itself is available. These support details are specific to the guide and software version, not a guarantee that the feature is available to every device or user worldwide. See Apple’s iOS 27 instructions for using Siri with ChatGPT for the applicable device and availability details.

What this means for Apple users
The integration may let a compatible user reach ChatGPT from an Apple Intelligence feature when it is useful, with Siri requesting permission under the applicable settings. It is not, by itself, a reason to buy a new phone: compatibility, software, language, regional availability, and ChatGPT availability all affect access. Nor does the partnership headline establish a dispute between Microsoft and OpenAI; the public statements describe an ongoing partnership, while leaving Microsoft’s reaction to Apple’s deal unverified.
