Apple agreed in January 2025 to pay a $95 million gross settlement fund to resolve Lopez v. Apple Inc., a proposed class action alleging that Siri sometimes activated unintentionally and captured private conversations. Apple denied the allegations and did not admit wrongdoing. The settlement’s listed claim deadline was July 2, 2025; as of this article’s August 18, 2026 publication date, readers should use the official administrator website to check payment or any late-claim status rather than assume new claims are open.

What the $95 million Siri settlement actually means

The case was Lopez v. Apple Inc., No. 4:19-cv-04577-JSW, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The agreement created a fund to resolve allegations; it was not a trial verdict that Apple spied on users.

What plaintiffs alleged about Siri

Plaintiffs alleged that Siri could activate without a user intentionally saying “Hey Siri” or otherwise invoking the assistant. They said resulting recordings could contain confidential or private conversations and alleged that Apple retained, reviewed or shared recordings and related information. The allegations arose after public reporting in 2019 about human review of some Siri audio.

How much could a claimant receive?

The frequently quoted $20 figure was an up-to amount per qualifying device, not a guaranteed check. The calculation worked this way:

  1. The settlement established a gross fund of $95 million.
  2. Approved attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses, service awards, notice and administration costs, taxes and other approved expenses came out of that fund.
  3. The remaining net fund was divided pro rata among valid claims, subject to the stated allocation of up to $20 per device and the five-device limit.

How to check an email or payment notice safely

  1. Confirm that it identifies the Lopez Voice Assistant Class Action Settlement.
  2. Open a new browser window and type the official address: lopezvoiceassistantsettlement.com, rather than clicking an unsolicited link.
  3. Compare the message with the site’s FAQ and contact information.
  4. Do not pay an upfront fee to file a claim or receive money.
  5. Do not give bank, tax or identity information to an unverified “claims service.”

The settlement administrator identified in the court materials is Angeion Group. Use its contact details only as displayed on the official site.

What the settlement does—and does not—prove about Siri privacy

The agreement resolves disputed claims without deciding whether Apple violated privacy or consumer-protection law. It does not establish that Apple intentionally listened to every user, that every activation produced a recording, or that Siri recordings were proven to have been used for targeted advertising. Plaintiffs made broader allegations about retention, review and sharing; Apple denied them.

The case nevertheless highlights a real privacy question for voice assistants: an unintended wake-up can begin processing speech that a user did not mean to address to the device. That concern should not be expanded into a claim that all Siri activity, or all Apple devices, operated in the same way described in this lawsuit.

Why the headline can be misleading

  • “Apple paid consumers $95 million” omits that $95 million was a gross fund before deductions.
  • “Everyone gets $20” ignores the qualifying-conduct requirement, five-device limit and pro-rata distribution.
  • “Apple admitted eavesdropping” contradicts the settlement’s no-admission position.
  • “Siri recordings were sold to advertisers” overstates an allegation that the settlement did not prove.
  • “Claims are still open” is unsafe after the listed July 2, 2025 deadline unless the administrator expressly announces an exception.

The Bottom Line

Apple’s $95 million Siri agreement was a settlement of allegations, not a finding that Apple intentionally spied on users. Eligible U.S. claimants could seek a pro-rata payment for up to five devices, but the July 2, 2025 claim deadline has passed and the actual amount was lower than the headline fund after deductions. Verify any payment or late-claim option only at the official settlement website.
