It starts $500 below the current 13-inch MacBook Air, restoring a lower-cost way into macOS. That makes the Neo a meaningful value option for basic computing—not a lower-priced substitute for the Air’s extra memory, storage, and performance headroom.
From a $599 rumor to the MacBook Neo
In September 2025, coverage described a possible sub-$1,000 Apple laptop with an iPhone-derived A18 Pro chip. Apple confirmed the product as MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, and U.S. availability began March 11. The early reporting anticipated the broad idea; the confirmed computer has a 13-inch display, four colors, and macOS Tahoe. It is now a shipping product, not a rumor. The original 2025 report and Apple’s announcement show how the concept became a retail Mac.
Apple announced U.S. starting prices of $599 for the base model and $499 for eligible education buyers. The Neo is Apple’s least-expensive laptop, according to the company. Apple’s availability announcement confirms the March 11 retail start.
What $599 buys—and what costs extra
The U.S. base configuration is designed to keep the entry price down. Apple’s store lists a $699 configuration with 512GB storage and Touch ID. Education pricing is restricted to eligible buyers; it is not the general retail price. Apple’s buying page lists current configurations.

| Feature | MacBook Neo base model |
|---|---|
| U.S. starting price | $599; $499 for eligible education buyers |
| Processor | A18 Pro; 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU |
| Unified memory | 8GB |
| Storage | 256GB SSD |
| Display | 13-inch Liquid Retina |
| Camera | 1080p FaceTime HD |
| Battery claim | Up to 16 hours; actual life varies with use |
| Design and cooling | Aluminum enclosure; fanless |
| Operating system | macOS Tahoe |
| Colors | Silver, blush, citrus, indigo |
| Higher configuration | $699 for 512GB storage and Touch ID |
The $599 price is a starting point, not necessarily the amount a buyer will spend. Taxes, accessories, protection, software, and added cloud or external storage can raise the total. If a large share of your files must stay on the computer, compare the $699 model with buying external storage or paying for cloud service over time.
Why the Air can feel like it lost value
The MacBook Air did not become a worse computer. The value concern is about affordability and Apple’s lineup: the M5 Air has a stronger baseline than earlier models, but the 13-inch version now starts at $1,099 in the U.S., compared with the earlier M4 Air’s $999 starting price. The 15-inch M5 Air starts at $1,299. Apple’s March 2026 announcement lists education prices of $999 and $1,199, respectively. Apple’s M5 Air announcement gives the dated pricing and availability.

For someone who mainly browses, writes papers, joins video calls, and streams, the Air’s additional capability may not justify paying hundreds more. Before the Neo, Apple lacked a current, purpose-built $599 macOS laptop. The Neo fills that price tier while leaving the Air positioned as the mainstream all-purpose option. That is a restoration of entry-level value, not proof that the Air itself is poor value.
MacBook Neo vs. MacBook Air M5
The meaningful comparison is the whole configuration and the work it needs to handle, not just A18 Pro versus M5. The Air’s 13-inch model starts with 16GB unified memory and 512GB storage, and includes two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports and MagSafe 3. Its 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display is larger than the Neo’s 13-inch display. Apple claims up to 18 hours of video streaming for the 13-inch Air, versus up to 16 hours for Neo; those are company battery estimates, not a promise of identical real-world runtime. See Apple’s Air specifications and 13-inch M5 Air technical specifications.

Apple says Neo is up to 50% faster for everyday tasks and up to 3x faster for on-device AI workloads than a specified Intel Core Ultra 5 PC configuration. Those are Apple’s “up to” comparisons against that system and workload, not independent test results or a universal performance ranking. They do not erase the practical difference between 8GB and 16GB of memory or between 256GB and 512GB of storage. Apple’s announcement provides the company’s comparison claims.
Who should buy the Neo?
- Students with everyday workloads: Browser-based school platforms, documents, presentations, messaging, and video calls are the sort of tasks for which the lower price can matter more than Air-level headroom.
- Families and first-time Mac buyers: It offers macOS and Apple ecosystem features without starting at Air pricing.
- Cloud-first users: If your documents and media mostly live online and you do not keep a large local library, 256GB may be workable.
- People replacing an old Intel Mac for ordinary use: The Neo can make sense if your applications and workload do not require more memory or storage.
- Small businesses with browser-based workflows: It may be a lower-cost macOS option for email, web applications, and office tasks. Apple names students, families, small-business owners, and new Mac users among its intended audiences.
For buyers who can spend $100 more, the 512GB model may be the more practical Neo if they store photos, downloads, or projects locally. Check the storage used on your current computer first; an upgrade is easier to evaluate before purchase than a full drive forces a later workaround.

When paying more for the Air makes sense
- Development: Virtual machines, containers, simulators, and large codebases can put more pressure on memory and sustained performance.
- Creative work: Large photo libraries and video projects benefit from more storage and system headroom.
- Heavy multitasking: If you routinely keep many demanding applications open, the Air’s 16GB baseline is a safer fit than Neo’s 8GB.
- Long ownership horizon: More memory and storage give a buyer more room as files and application demands grow, though no specific useful lifespan is guaranteed.
- Connectivity needs: The Air’s documented Thunderbolt 4 ports and MagSafe 3 may suit workflows involving peripherals and external displays better; check Apple’s current model specifications against your exact setup.
This is a headroom argument, not a claim that Neo cannot run professional software. App compatibility and comfortable performance under a particular workload are separate questions; the concrete difference established by the configurations is that the base Neo has less memory and storage.
Check the full cost before deciding
The Neo’s low sticker price can conceal costs that matter to a household budget. The $499 education price only applies to eligible education buyers, while $599 is the general U.S. starting price. The $699 model is a separate configuration, not an automatic upgrade included with the base price. Before buying, account for accessories, protection, software, and how you plan to handle storage.

- Measure your current storage use: Compare the computer’s occupied space with the Neo’s 256GB capacity, leaving room for applications, updates, and offline files.
- Price the 512GB upgrade against alternatives: Consider an external drive or cloud storage, including any recurring fees and the inconvenience of needing files online.
- Include accessories you actually need: A hub, case, external display, or storage can change the total; do not assume a cheap laptop will remain a cheap setup if your workflow needs add-ons.
- Consider a refurbished Mac if performance matters more: Inventory and prices vary, but an older M-series Air may offer a better balance of memory, storage, and capability for less than a new M5 Air. Check Apple’s refurbished Mac store.
Other options for a tight budget
A Chromebook remains a strong option when work is almost entirely browser-based and low-cost administration matters more than macOS; it is not suitable for Mac-only applications. Google’s Chromebook information is a starting point for that category.
An iPad with a keyboard is a better fit for drawing, handwriting, touch use, and media consumption, but less suited to conventional desktop multitasking, developer tools, or Mac-specific software. Compare Apple’s iPad range if tablet flexibility matters more than a Mac workflow.
A budget Windows laptop may offer a different mix of ports, storage, and hardware for the money, but quality varies by model and it does not provide macOS or deep iPhone integration. Microsoft’s Surface range is one Windows option to compare; do not treat its specifications as representative of every budget Windows laptop.
Does the $599 MacBook restore the value the Air lost?
Yes, if “value” means an affordable current Mac for everyday tasks: the Neo restores a lower entry point that the Air’s M5 pricing no longer fills. No, if the claim means the Air has become a bad purchase or that the Neo replaces it. The Neo is the budget Mac; the Air remains the more capable all-purpose laptop for users who will use its additional memory, storage, and connectivity.
