Apple agreed to a $20 million settlement over claims that batteries in certain early Apple Watch models could swell and cause screens to detach, crack, or shatter. A federal court approved the settlement in 2025, but the agreement did not establish that Apple was liable or that the allegations were proven. Eligibility was narrower than simply owning one of the watches: the class definition also required a qualifying issue report in Apple’s records.
What the Apple Watch settlement covered
The case concerned the First Generation Apple Watch and Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3. Plaintiffs alleged that battery swelling in these models could cause screens to detach, crack, or shatter, potentially creating a risk of cuts or other injury. Those are allegations in the lawsuit, not findings that every covered watch had a swollen battery or that Apple was at fault.
The settlement class was narrower than the claims originally pleaded. In the preliminary approval order, the court recounted that plaintiffs narrowed the class to the original watch and Series 1–3 after discovery. The court said later models were outside this settlement class and were not releasing claims through it; the settlement therefore does not cover Series 4 or later. - You were a natural person residing in the United States.
- You owned a First Generation, Series 1, Series 2, or Series 3 Apple Watch for personal or household use.
- Your report of an issue potentially related to battery swelling appeared in Apple’s records during the period from April 24, 2015, through February 6, 2024.
Owning one of the listed models by itself did not meet the stated definition. The settlement materials describe the qualifying reports as appearing in Apple’s records; they do not establish that every owner, or every owner who experienced a problem, qualified.
How much the settlement paid
The $20 million was the gross, non-reversionary settlement fund—not a guaranteed $20 million payout to watch owners. The fund also covered court-approved attorneys’ fees, litigation expenses, administration costs, and incentive awards. The court described a payment of $20 per covered device, subject to a pro-rata reduction below $20 if the fund balance required it. Payments could rise to as much as $50 per device if more than $50,000 remained after allocated costs.

Plaintiffs estimated that the average payment could be approximately $25 per covered device. That was an estimate discussed by the court, not a guaranteed amount or a final average distribution. The court’s approved deductions included:

Did eligible owners need to file a claim?
The court order said class members could receive payment without filing a claim if the settlement administrator confirmed valid, current payment information. The official settlement information instructed eligible people to confirm or update their payment details. The available settlement materials do not establish whether the administrator is still active or whether a particular person has been paid, so check directly with the administrator for current individual status.
The official case FAQ described the suit as involving claims by plaintiffs that the covered watches experienced issues allegedly related to battery swelling, including alleged consumer-protection and warranty violations. The settlement website contains the official case information.

What the court approved—and what approval means
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California held its final fairness hearing on April 10, 2025, and granted final approval. The court found the settlement fair, adequate, and reasonable and concluded that class members received adequate notice. The case began in December 2021; the parties mediated in November 2023, and preliminary approval followed on October 25, 2024.
Approval resolved the case under the settlement terms; it did not amount to a finding that Apple caused the alleged battery issue. The settlement materials also do not establish that every covered device experienced swelling or damage.

What staying in the class meant
Class members who did not opt out released claims arising out of or related to the case, as defined in the settlement. The court said those members could not bring another lawsuit against Apple over related claims. The release applied to the claims described by the settlement; owners of Series 4 and later were outside this class and did not release claims through it.
Repair-cost figures are not current repair prices
The preliminary approval order discussed plaintiffs’ damages analyses, which included a $79 service-cost figure and a $156 per-unit impairment figure. These were case-related analyses, not an established loss for every owner or a current Apple repair quote. They should not be used to estimate what a repair costs today.
