Apple announced its 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip on October 15, 2025, with retail availability starting October 22. At launch, Apple said it could deliver up to 20% faster multithreaded CPU performance, 1.6 times faster graphics in pro apps and 3.5 times faster AI performance than a specified M4 MacBook Pro. Those are Apple-reported maximums, not independent test results or guarantees for every app.
When Apple launched the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro
Apple announced the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 on October 15, 2025. Orders opened that day, and Apple said deliveries and in-store availability would begin October 22. The launch colors were space black and silver. The original U.S. starting price was $1,599, or $1,499 for education customers. These are launch-era prices, not current retail quotes. What Apple’s M4 performance comparisons mean
Apple compared the M5 model with a 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro equipped with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 32GB of unified memory and a 2TB SSD. Apple says its tests were conducted in September 2025. The results below are maximums Apple reported for particular types of work, rather than a single result applicable to every workload.
| Workload or measure | Apple-reported comparison with M4 |
|---|---|
| Multithreaded CPU performance, including code compiling | Up to 20% faster |
| Graphics performance in pro apps | Up to 1.6 times faster |
| Game frame rates | Up to 1.6 times higher |
| AI performance | Up to 3.5 times faster |
| SSD performance | Up to 2 times faster than the prior generation |
Apple also cited selected app comparisons: Topaz Video AI video enhancement up to 1.8 times faster than on M4 and 7.7 times faster than on a 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro; Blender rendering up to 1.7 times faster than M4 and 6.8 times faster than M1; and Xcode builds up to 1.2 times faster than M4 and 2.1 times faster than M1. These are Apple’s workload-specific comparisons, not general speed multipliers. The company’s full test qualifications are in its launch announcement.

AI claims and availability
Apple positioned the M5 around on-device AI and described Apple Intelligence as being in beta at launch. Apple noted that feature and language availability could vary by region and language, so the launch announcement does not establish which features are available to every user now. Check Apple’s current regional support information before relying on a particular feature.

Is the base M5 MacBook Pro the latest model?
Not the highest chip tier: Apple announced 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max on March 3, 2026. The base M5 is a separate configuration, and Apple’s announcement continued to list it with 1TB standard storage and a $1,699 U.S. starting price. Which tier makes sense depends on the apps and workload, as well as the memory and storage configuration and price being offered. Apple’s published performance figures are selective maximum comparisons, not directly interchangeable independent benchmark results.
