Apple did not predict that its next products will fail or definitely earn lower margins than the iPhone. In its fiscal 2024 Form 10-K, the company warned that new products, services and technologies may generate lower revenue and lower profit margins than existing offerings.
That conditional warning matters because Apple’s financial model is built around two unusually powerful businesses: the iPhone and high-margin Services. The question for investors is not whether every new product must become another iPhone, but whether Apple can build enough profitable growth to offset a mature smartphone business without damaging its margin structure.

What Apple actually disclosed
Apple’s fiscal year ended September 28, 2024, and its annual report included this risk-factor language:

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The filing said that such an outcome could materially harm Apple’s business, results of operations and financial condition. It did not identify the iPhone, Apple Vision Pro or Apple Intelligence as a guaranteed source of lower profits. Nor did it provide a forecast, target or product-by-product margin estimate.
That distinction is important. A risk factor describes a possibility that investors should consider; it is not the same as management guidance. The headline interpretation—that future products might never be as profitable as the iPhone—is directionally understandable, but it is stronger than Apple’s precise wording.

Why the iPhone is such a difficult benchmark
The iPhone is not simply a piece of hardware sold at a premium price. It sits at the center of a mature ecosystem that includes:
- A large installed user base and a recurring upgrade cycle.
- Customer loyalty and premium pricing.
- A highly developed global supply chain.
- Accessories such as AirPods and Apple Watch.
- Services including App Store activity, advertising, subscriptions, cloud storage, payments and AppleCare.
- Software and platform costs spread across a very large customer base.
A new category usually begins with the opposite economics. Apple may need to absorb substantial research and development, component, manufacturing, marketing, distribution and support costs before demand reaches sufficient scale. Early production volumes can be low, defects can be expensive to fix and software development may continue for years before a platform produces meaningful revenue.
That is why “less profitable than the iPhone” does not necessarily mean “bad product.” A new device could strengthen customer retention, encourage iPhone upgrades, increase Services usage or create a platform for later generations while delivering weaker standalone economics in its early years.

Apple’s 2024 revenue and margin structure
Apple’s fiscal 2024 results show why product mix matters so much. The company reported total net sales of $391.035 billion.
| Category | Fiscal 2024 revenue |
|---|---|
| iPhone | $201.183 billion |
| Services | $96.169 billion |
| Wearables, Home and Accessories | $37.005 billion |
| Mac | $29.984 billion |
| iPad | $26.694 billion |
The iPhone generated just over half of Apple’s reported revenue, while Services was the second-largest category and grew 13% year over year.

The margin difference is even more significant:
| Category | Gross margin | Gross-margin percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Products | $109.633 billion | 37.2% |
| Services | $71.050 billion | 73.9% |
| Total company | — | 46.2% |
Services generated a gross-margin percentage nearly twice that of Products. As a result, Apple could report rising revenue while still facing pressure if growth shifted toward lower-margin hardware or toward services that require substantial infrastructure and support spending.
Apple does not report a standalone iPhone gross margin. The company reports iPhone revenue, but it does not provide enough product-level detail to establish an official iPhone margin. Estimates that assign ecosystem revenue or platform costs to the iPhone should therefore be treated as external analysis, not Apple-reported figures.
Vision Pro shows the challenge of creating a new category
Apple Vision Pro is the clearest example of the issue. Apple positioned it as its first spatial computer, but its U.S. launch price was $3,499. That price may support premium positioning, yet price alone does not prove high profitability.

A first-generation spatial-computing product can involve expensive displays, sensors, processors, manufacturing arrangements, retail demonstrations, software development, customer support and content creation. It also entered a market that had not yet reached mass adoption. Apple may ultimately need lower prices, smaller form factors, better applications or stronger enterprise use cases before the category can achieve significant scale.

Apple Intelligence creates a different economics problem
Artificial intelligence introduces costs and opportunities that do not fit neatly into the traditional hardware model. Apple Intelligence was initially positioned primarily as a set of device features that could make Apple products more useful and encourage upgrades, rather than as a separately priced consumer subscription.
That strategy could monetize AI indirectly. Better features might increase device demand, strengthen customer retention, drive developer activity or support higher Services usage. But Apple may still need to fund model training, inference, cloud infrastructure, privacy protections, safety systems and third-party technology partnerships.

Apple’s filing also warned that new and complex technologies, including AI-related features, can create safety, quality, reliability, regulatory and liability risks. Harmful, inaccurate or otherwise negative outputs could create costs even if an AI feature does not carry a separate price.
In other words, AI could increase the value of Apple’s ecosystem without becoming a high-margin revenue line on its own. It could also raise customer expectations faster than Apple can deliver improvements.

Both interpretations deserve consideration.
Public companies routinely include extensive risk factors covering competition, foreign exchange, supply chains, geopolitical tensions, cybersecurity, privacy, regulation, product defects and changing customer demand. One contemporaneous commentary argued that the headline placed too much weight on generic annual-report language.
Apple’s prior filings reportedly discussed the possibility that new product introductions could involve “higher cost structures.” Contemporary reporting said the 2024 wording was more direct about potentially lower revenues and profit margins. That does not establish that Apple had issued a new accounting forecast or that it had measured lower margins for a specific product.

The most defensible reading has three layers:
- Legally: It is a risk disclosure, and much of the filing is necessarily cautious.
- Strategically: It acknowledges that the iPhone’s scale and ecosystem make its economics unusually difficult to reproduce.
- Financially: It is not, by itself, evidence of an imminent decline in Apple’s margins.
Apple’s fiscal 2024 total gross margin was 46.2%, compared with 44.1% in 2023. Any claim that Apple’s margins are currently declining would require later, date-specific financial data.

What investors should watch
The warning becomes more financially meaningful if the company’s reported results show that new initiatives are changing the mix of revenue and costs. Relevant indicators include:
- Products gross margin: A sustained decline could indicate pressure from new hardware, pricing or manufacturing costs.
- Services gross margin: This is especially important because Services carries a much higher reported margin than Products.
- Total company gross margin: Watch whether revenue growth is translating into gross-profit growth.
- Services growth: Continued expansion can help offset slower iPhone growth and support the overall margin structure.
- Research and development: Apple spent $31.370 billion on R&D in fiscal 2024. Rising investment can be sensible, but it must eventually support durable products or services.
- AI infrastructure spending: Compute, data-center and partnership costs may rise before direct monetization becomes visible.
- New-category adoption: Vision Pro and successor products will need meaningful scale, not merely a high selling price.
- AI monetization: Investors should distinguish between revenue from a separately priced service and indirect monetization through upgrades, retention or ecosystem activity.
- Product mix commentary: Management’s explanations of pricing, component costs and category mix can reveal pressure before a new business becomes large enough to report separately.
Apple does not need to produce one literal “next iPhone.” Several durable businesses could collectively replace the growth and profit contribution of a maturing smartphone franchise. But those businesses must become large enough to matter, and they must do so without permanently weakening Apple’s mix of high-margin Services and premium hardware.
The bottom line for investors
Apple’s filing was best understood as expectation management and strategic realism, not an admission that Vision Pro, Apple Intelligence or every future product will be unprofitable. The company warned that new offerings could generate lower revenue and margins than existing products.
The underlying challenge is real: the iPhone combines scale, premium pricing, repeat upgrades and ecosystem revenue in a way that is exceptionally hard to replicate. Apple’s future growth will depend less on finding one identical replacement and more on building multiple businesses that together preserve revenue growth, customer loyalty and a healthy margin structure.
