Apple products were not automatically tax-free across the United States in 2022. Some state sales tax holidays covered computers, so an eligible MacBook or other Apple computer could qualify—but only if the state’s dates, product rules, price limit and purchase conditions were met. Florida’s 2022 holiday, for example, covered certain personal computers and computer-related accessories costing $1,500 or less when bought for noncommercial home or personal use.
Were Apple products included in 2022 sales tax holidays?
Sometimes. States set their own holiday dates and rules; there was no single national list of tax-free Apple products. The Federation of Tax Administrators’ 2022 compilation counted 19 states holding 35 sales tax holidays, with covered categories and limits varying among programs. Its state-by-state list and the Tax Foundation’s 2022 overview show why a computer that qualified in one state might not qualify in another.
A MacBook Air laptop is an example of a computer that might fit a state’s eligible category. That does not mean every model, accessory or Apple purchase qualified: the state’s definition, applicable price cap and other conditions controlled.
What did states’ 2022 rules require?
Florida: computer price and use limits
Florida’s back-to-school sales tax holiday ran from July 25 through August 7, 2022. The state included qualifying personal computers and certain computer-related accessories priced at $1,500 or less, provided they were purchased for noncommercial home or personal use. The official 2022 Florida guidance is a state-specific example, not a rule for Apple purchases nationwide.

Tennessee: different dates and thresholds
Tennessee’s 2022 holiday ran July 29 through July 31. It covered clothing and school supplies under $100 and computers under $1,500; the state said online purchases were included. These details applied to Tennessee’s program and should not be applied to other states. See the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s 2022 announcement.
New Jersey: only specified sales qualified
New Jersey identified its 2022 holiday as August 27 through September 5. The state describes a sales tax holiday as a temporary exemption for specified retail sales, so the exemption did not automatically cover every purchase made during those dates. How to check whether an Apple purchase qualified
- Identify the state and purchase date. Confirm that the state had a holiday in effect on the transaction date; holiday dates differed by state.
- Check the exact product category. Look for computers or computer-related accessories in that state’s eligible-item rules. Do not assume phones, tablets, accessories or services were included just because computers were.
- Compare the item price with the state’s cap. Check how the rule treats the price of an individual item and whether the chosen model or accessory falls within the limit.
- Review purchase-purpose and purchaser rules. Some programs impose conditions, such as Florida’s 2022 noncommercial home or personal-use requirement.
- Confirm online and local treatment. Check whether online transactions qualified and whether local participation or other jurisdiction-specific rules affected the sale.
Can you use the 2022 rules for a purchase now?
No. The dates and requirements above describe 2022 programs, not current shopping advice. States can change or discontinue holidays, and current-year rules may differ. Florida’s Department of Revenue, for example, publishes a separate 2026 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday page; that page does not establish rules for other states. For a current purchase, consult the relevant state revenue department’s page for the applicable year and verify dates, eligible items, price caps, online-sale rules and purchase conditions before checkout.
